If there's one thing that can be said about this week's Xbox Live Arcade releases, it's that they're certainly running the gamut of tastes. These two new games appeal to both railway enthusiasts and fans of watching cuddly critters get eviscerated. First up is Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm, a game modeled after the popular series of Web cartoons. Fans of the series know without even reading this that the game will be rated M for Mature. It will cost you 800 MS points ($10 USD) and lets players take control of Lumpy to rescue his friends from terrible demise. And he'll probably fail.

EA's "Yahtzee" for the iPod is very faithful to the original classic -- so much so that, just like the original, it's only fun if you have some good friends with you, writes The Mac Observer's Vern Seward. EA didn't add much to make single-person play very interesting. However, for a group setting in close quarters -- a road trip, for instance -- it's a fine time-passer.

These kids today — if they aren’t hacking around with major service providers, they’re getting themselves put on double secret probation at Apple stores worldwide for doing a little unauthorized product demo. Palo Alto High School senior and devout Apple fan Daniel Fukuba and some friends were killing time at the company’s local retail shrine last weekend, and Fukuba, wanting to show off the iPhone’s abilities, downloaded a third-party car racing game called “Raging Thunder” onto one of the display units. He was approached questioningly first by an employee and then by the manager, but there was no fuss until the group left the store and was halfway down the block. According to Fukuba, the manager chased them down, herded them back to the store, detained them while he called police, kept them there for 2½ hours, gave them

Loopt has an appealing application that allows you to track your friends and allows them to track you on a graphic map. It's kind of like a GPS-sonar radar that I've just discovered on the iPhone 3G. But, is this application really more like an electronic leash? Will your significant other track you? Will moms and dads track their children this year? Yes, Loopt has an extensive privacy policy that discourages/prohibits kids under 14 years old from using the service, but even one of my most 'public' friends (both online and in off-line) was actually hesitant about installing Loopt on his iPhone 3G. Disclosing your location to a third-party seemed to bother him greatly. The thought is that if you're near a store that is having a special you may get an SMS-text bulletin or coupon.
