It looks like Google has won the first salvo in the social ID battle. Google announced that its Friend Connect service is now compatible with Twitter, meaning that users can now use their Twitter logon information to log into other Friend-Connect compatible sites and share social networking information. And so far, no word from Twitter on when it will become compatible with Facebook's competing service, Facebook Connect. Chalk one up for open social networking standards.

We added a test page to our website this week so I could try out Google Friend Connect, as I wanted to see for myself what the implications were for webmasters and users as the GFC "gadgets" gradually rolling out across the web. If you aren't aware of GFC, it is Google's attempt to "socialise" the web by enabling social networking type features to be easily added to existing websites, whether they have existing communities or not.

This program has been in private beta for a while now — but just recently it was opened up for everyone to use. Friend Connect is an extremely simple way to make any website you have a bit more social — people that “join” your site (which I think can be confusing when you already have a mechanism for users to sign up) can use embedded Google gadgets which take advantage of Google’s Open Social API.

Connecting with friends and family is the theme of the season in many parts of the world, so it's fitting that Google wants to get in on the social fun. Going head-on with Facebook Connect's public release, albeit with a more distributed approach, Google has announced the public beta availability of Google Friend Connect, originally announced and previewed in May. As a standards-based platform for single sign-on and bringing existing social networks to other websites, Google is taking a more standards-based, though decentralized approach, to simplifying the social web.

As a company, Google has never really been one to sit back and just watch what the other guys are doing; instead, the company is continuously venturing into new areas. Now, they’re looking to get in on the social networking action by going head-to-head with Facebook’s newly launched Connect. Similarly named, Google’s new Friend Connect makes it possible for website owners to embed review forms, comments, photo-sharing widgets, and other social tools that pull content from established communities such as Flickr.
