Olympus / Panasonic announce Micro Four Thirds

Olympus and Panasonic have announced a new, mirrorless format / lens mount based on (and compatible with) Four Thirds. The Micro Four Thirds system uses the same sensor size (18 x 13.5 mm) but allows slimmer cameras by removing the mirror box and optical viewfinder. The new format has three key technical differences: (1) roughly half the flange back distance (distance from mount to the sensor), (2) a smaller diameter lens mount (6 mm smaller) and (3) two additional contact points for lens-to-body communication (now 11 points). Removing the mirror mechanism allows this shorter flange back distance, meaning lenses for the new mount can be considerably smaller than current Four Thirds designs. The format will require framing to be carried out using Live View on either the LCD monitor or an EVF.

Four devs working on PS3 Bioshock

The PlayStation 3 version of BioShock is shaping up to be quite a beast: a grand total of four developers are working on the port. Aside from 2K Boston and 2K Australia (the two teams who originally produced and released the game on the Xbox 360 and PC last summer) 2K Marin and an external studio, Digital Extremes have also signed on. It's worth nothing the need for four studios (that's got to set a record, maybe two with it being a port) could be due to the fact each of them are believed to be working on other projects at the moment.

How To See In Four Dimensions

An anonymous reader writes "Think it's impossible to see four-dimensional objects? These videos will show you otherwise. Some mathematicians work with four-dimensional objects all the time, and they've developed some clever tricks to get a feeling for what they're like. The techniques begin by imagining how two-dimensional creatures, like those in Edwin Abbot's 'Flatland,' could get a feeling for three-dimensional objects. When those techniques are transferred up a dimension, the results are gorgeous."

Olympus, Panasonic Develop Micro Four Thirds System

Olympus Imaging Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic) have joined forces to create the Micro Four Thirds System standard, which will bring reduced size and weight to the existing Four Third System for interchangeable lens type digital camera systems.

Olympus, Panasonic prep Micro Four Thirds...

Addressing complaints from amateur photographers hoping to graduate to digital SLRs, Olympus and Panasonic today teamed up to develop a much smaller version of the Four Thirds lens system. The new approach is simply titled Micro Four Thirds and aims to significantly shrink the dimensions needed for an interchangeable lens system while making relatively mild sacrifices. While not a true SLR system in that it drops the use of a mirror, the system will purportedly generate the same image quality as the full-size offering and allow for compact, light cameras that would be more familiar to point-and-shoot owners.

Olympus and Panasonic Announce New Micro Four Thirds System Standard

Olympus Imaging Corporation (Olympus Imaging) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic) today announced joint development of technologies and devices for the "Micro Four Thirds System standard," a new standard that extends the benefits of the Four Thirds System standard for interchangeable lens type digital camera systems by enabling dramatic reductions in size and weight. Under the terms of an agreement between the two companies, they will work jointly toward commercial production of significantly lighter and more compact interchangeable lens type digital camera systems.

Olympus and Panasonic Launch Micro Four Thirds System For Smaller, Rangefinder-Like SLRs

Olympus and Panasonic rolled out a new standard for interoperable lenses and camera bodies today in Japan, which means we could see yet another new camera category smashed in between consumer, pro-sumer, con-fessional, and all the rest. The Micro Four Thirds system is basically a slimmed down version of the two companies' Four Thirds system, which allowed member companies to build lenses and bodies that were digital-only and interoperable between brands. And while the new Micro version may not sound like much, it could result in the revival of an all-digital, Leica-like quasi rangefinder system with tons of high-quality lens choices.

Parthiv aims to cement place in squad

PARTHIV PATEL is four years older, hopefully wiser, but the impish smile that was a trademark of the diminutive wicketkeeper when he last played Test cricket, four years ago, is still very much around. It seems odd that someone who spent four years out of favour, and is making a comeback, is only 23, but then Parthiv always had time on his side.

Four New Summarits

Understatement almost always speaks louder than overstatement; or if not louder, then generally with more authority. The four new Leica Summarits, for M-series Leicas, Zeiss Ikons, and Voigtländer Bessas, are about as far from ostentatious as you can get; they are merely first-class tools for the photographer who knows what he or she is doing.

A PROPOSAL to radically overhaul world cricket's ad hoc and often irrelevant programming, with possible finals every four years between the best Test, one-day and Twenty20 nations, is being presented to the International Cricket Council this week in Dubai.
