Korean software engineers are introducing a new digital music format dubbed MT9 and want it to replace the MP3 as the de facto format for the future. With the ability to separate music into six channels (voice, chorus, piano, guitar, bass, and drum), a listener can hear how bad some singers really are without the band to cover up their warbling.

In a recent post, Andrew Yates asked, "How much data is a human genome?" He then did a little math to show that an uncompressed diploid human genome would easily fit on two music CDs, if stored as a text file. That got Genetic Future's Daniel MacArthur thinking. There are, he says, other formats that a human genome could be stored in, including as images from an Illumina machine. In that format, a genome with 30x coverage would take up about 28.80 terabytes. Also, if the sequence data is stored as a Sequence Read Format file, the storage space'll top out at 1.98 terabytes.

The problem with the whole format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray is not choosing the winner—that's probably still a year or two away. The problem is that if you pick one format, you'll be missing out on great movies in the other format. Choose Blu-ray, and you miss out on the Matrix Trilogy and Transformers. Chose HD DVD, and no Pirates of the Caribbean for you.

LONDON (Agencies): New international cricket chief Haroon Lorgat said it was important that the expanding Twenty20 format did not begin to dominate the Test and 50-over game. South African Lorgat, who will become the International Cricket Council's (ICC) chief executive in July, said test cricket must remain the leading format in the sport. "I sat in on the ICC cricket committee meeting this month and they were very clear that Test cricket should remain the pinnacle of the game and I agree," Lorgat told Reuters in a telephone interview. Twenty20, which began in England in 2003, is making rapid progress as the game's most popular format and since the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Cup in September, a slew of Twenty20 events have surfaced. The unofficial Indian Cricket League began, the officially-backed Indian Premier League started last mon

Andy Updegrove writes "About two hours ago, Microsoft announced that it will update Office 2007 to natively support ODF 1.1, but not to implement its own OOXML format. Not until Office 14 is released (no date given so far for that) will anyone be able to buy an OOXML ISO-compliant version. Why will Microsoft do this after so many years of refusal? Perhaps because the only way it can deliver a product to government customers that meets an ISO/IEC document format standard is by finally taking the plunge, and supporting 'that other format.' Still, many questions remain, such as when this upgrade will actually be released, how good a job it will do, and whether the API Microsoft has said it will make available to permit developers to supply 'save to ODF' default plugins will be supported by a patent non-assertion promise allowing implementati

One of the reasons they gave for this is that TIFF files require less storage space. While that is true, I wonder if TIFF is the best format going into the future. Are TIFFs better than PDFs for future use? I wonder what format you think would last longer. Are there any other formats that you think would be better or more future-proof? To me, storage is not a good enough reason to go to TIFF, because storage prices are always dropping anyway. Also, since they already have many of these files in PDF format and they want to convert them into multipage TIFFs, are there any programs that you can recommend that will perform batch processing of files so that we do not have to co

A new audio format in the works could provide much more flexibility for both listening and editing to music, according to its creators. Developed by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and put into public use as Music 2.0 by Audizen, the MT9 standard would provide six audio channels for different instruments, similar to multi-track recording at a studio. Listeners could separately adjust the volume for each track to either balance out audio quality or alter the track for specific purposes: karaoke singers could mute vocals to use their own, while remix artists could selectively drop out certain parts of the track without needing access to the master recordings.
