Mozilla CEO: First Firefox Mobile Alpha Release "In a Few Weeks"

When we saw Firefox Mobile in action a few months ago, it looked pretty snazzy, but we were a bit concerned by a few reports floating around that it might be a long wait to actually get our hands on it. Happily, that's not the case. Mozilla CEO John Lilly says that we'll see the first Firefox Mobile alpha releases "in a few weeks." Is anyone else psyched for Firefox Mobile and the start of a whole new browser war? I am pretty bummed that the iPhone won't be one of the battlegrounds though because of the SDK restrictions. Why the world needs PSP 2.0

Why the world needs PSP 2.0The PSP has been kicking around for a few years with very few updates. Sure, Sony’s dished out a few add-ons, and 3rd party firms have done their best to prolong its life, but deep down we know what the PSP needs: a complete overhaul.

A regular Flow of Content is what search engines want and require

The Internet is full of Saturday Morning Bloggers. These bloggers ignore their blogs all week, then they post a few dozen articles in their blog and then spend a few hours adding comments to other blogs. This is a great way to spend a Saturday, but it provides very little SEO marketing benefits. Search engines need a steady flow of comments. Most blogs that appear in a web search have a post that has been published within the last few hours. Dozens of blog search engines operate for the sole purpose of alerting the big five search engines of new content. The posts that you publish on Saturday are already out of the lists by Sunday afternoon. That is why it is important to provide the search engines with fresh content daily.

Review: Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise

It has been a rather long time since I pulled a twelve hour gaming session. The last was probably sometime during my first year in WoW but since then there's been nothing which has held my attention for more than a few hours here and there. So you can say I wasn't expecting to be giving up on Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise at five in the morning, a good half a day after first inserting the disc. Over the last few years I've been less and less inclined to devote huge chunks of my time to driving, shooting and commanding armies or groups of brave adventurers. The appeal... it's just not the same as it once was. Yet it seems that if you give me a virtual spade, some seed packets and a few colorful animals, only physical exhaustion will bring me to quit my game.

After my last few articles on how to connect Ubuntu Linux to network shares and a network printer, I want to have a look at some of the more fun aspects of Ubuntu Linux. I thought this was appropriate at the moment, so...let the games begin! The end

First Screens of Firefox Mobile Surface with Few Surprises, No Release Date

Early October saw Mozilla CEO John Lilly claiming Firefox Mobile would be available in a few weeks. That's still the case today, but one additional bit of info we can deliver to you are some of the first screen shots of the browser to hit the net. According to the Unwired, these screens are of Firefox Mobile running on a Windows Mobile Professional touchscreen smartphone. In a separate screen, developers were able to run an Acid3 test with a score of 88/100. Not too shabby for a mobile browser. [The Unwired]

Firefox Mobile to hit alpha stage in a few weeks

It seems that the Mozilla Foundation's CEO, John Lilly, has provided an update as to the progress being made with the group's Firefox Mobile browser. While we had heard recent reports that it would not be ready for the general consumer until the year 2010, Lilly said recently that an early "alpha" test version would be available internally "within a few weeks."

How Dropbox ended my search for seamless sync on Linux

A few months ago, our own Jon Stokes bemoaned the frustration of managing and accessing data strewn across a multitude of personal computing devices. His description of the challenges of syncing and saving resonated with many of us on the Ars staff and with quite a few readers, too. As you can see by looking at the comments that some of you posted in response to Jon's synchronization conundrum, many of us roll our own imperfect solutions and yearn for something better.

Movie studios sue RealNetwork over DVD copy program

Over the last few years if has become very popular to store all digital media on the harddrive and even if copying DVDs has been available for many years, few commercial companies have offered this function to people who want to make backups or simply store the movies on harddrives. With the everdropping harddrive price and with capacities up to 1.5TB in a single 3.5" harddrive, the interest for DVD copying has steadily increased, which has also benefited the NAS and Home Server market.

10+ Reasons Why You Should Hate the iPhone

Everybody loves the iPhone. Even though few in India have seen, touched, or used the device, the buzz for the product is palpable; its praise almost universal. While we agree that the iPhone is a great device that gets a lot right, there are several faults that need to be highlighted. The most glaring of these faults have come crawling out of the woodwork in the past few weeks.

How to Make Money Off Free iPhone Games

Though many games on the iPhone App Store cost a few dollars to download, a few are being offered for free. Instead of charging users to buy the games, the developers of those programs are contracting with brands and using the games as marketing avenues.

Mini-Report from LinuxWorld Expo Day 1

IconLinuxWorld's Expo 2004 started today and we were there for a few hours discussing a few interesting matters with the Linux luminaries and companies. Check in for some info and images from the expo.

Regular Linux Desktops on the XO

Icon"Me and Bobby Powers have spent a few hours smoothing out the process of getting fully-featured Linux desktops to boot on the XO laptop. On the whole, OLPC developers have been pretty good at getting code upstream, so only a few fixups are needed to get things operational on the XO." On a slightly (stretching it here) related note, here is a detailed guide on installing and optimising Ubuntu on the Acer Aspire One that we reviewed last week. I replaced the default Linpus installation with Ubuntu using this guide, and I must say that I am quite pleased.

Open source can still win in a down economy

I was meeting with venture investors the last few days and it's clear that the impact of the credit crisis and the overall bleak economic outlook has people really freaked out. Rightly so, but it's times like these where smart investors invest in early-stage ideas that will take a few years to mature.

Things left unsaid, in a recent interview with Sony's CEO

When Charlie Rose interviewed Sony CEO Sir Harold Stringer on Wednesday, a few excellent questions were posed -- but a few other should have been.
