Inforworld reports that Facebook has cut off Google's Friend Connect service from accessing Facebook's APIs. Facebook claims that Google Friend Connect "redistributes user information from Facebook to other developers without users’ knowledge, which doesn’t respect the privacy standards our users have come to expect." Techcrunch has more details about what Google was doing and what Facebook objected to. Facebook is getting a fair amount of flack for this decision, and it's not hard to see why. Given that Facebook has just rolled out its own competing service for linking third-party websites to Facebook, we can't help but wonder if the privacy issues aren't just a cover to avoid having to interoperate with a major competitor.

azuredrake writes "Facebook, the largest social networking site in the US, has sued German social networking site studiVZ on the grounds that studiVZ has copied the look and feel of Facebook in order to piggyback off their success. According to the article, 'The German company sued by Facebook for running a "knockoff" of the social networking Web site said on Sunday it asked a German court to declare that Facebook's claims are without merit.' However, a simple glance at the two sites' homepages seems to tell a different story — studiVZ copies many things from Facebook, from their button layout down to the font they're using."

San Francisco - Online social network Facebook has blocked a recent feature offered by Google (NASD: GOOG) that would have let users take their personal data from Facebook and automatically post it on other sites, Wired.com reported. The company has banned Google's new Friend Connect service, saying it "doesn't respect the privacy standards our users have come to expect." Meanwhile, the company this week announced plans to launch its own Facebook Connect that will do much the same thing as Friend Connect, but allow Facebook to retain control over how its members' personal data is shared.

Google’s new Friend Connect initiative is in trouble. On May 15, Facebook effectively pulled out of participation in Google Friend Connect service, which links social networks and traditional Web sites. “Now that Google has launched Friend Connect, weâve had a chance to evaluate the technology. Weâve found that it redistributes user information from Facebook to other developers without usersâ knowledge, which doesnât respect the privacy standards our users have come to expect and is a violation of our Terms of Service. Just as weâve been forced to do for other applications that redistribute data in a way users might not expect or understand, weâve had to suspend Friend Connectâs access to Facebook user information until it comes into compliance,” according to Facebook.

kaos07 links to this ZDNet story, according to which "Researchers at software vendor CA have discovered that social networking site Facebook is able to track the buying habits of its users on affiliated third-party sites even when they are logged out of their account or have opted out of its controversial 'Beacon' tracking service. Responding to privacy concerns, Facebook has since moved to reassure users that it only tracks and publishes data about their purchases if they are both logged in to Facebook and have opted-in to having this information listed on their profile. But in 'extremely disconcerting' findings that directly contradict these assurances, researchers at CA's Security Advisory service have found that data about these transactions are sent to Facebook regardless of a user's actions.

Facebook is releasing as open-source software parts of its application development platform in order to make it easier for programmers to create applications for the social-networking site, the company announced Monday. Facebook will offer as open source "most" of the code that runs its platform, plus implementations of its most popular methods and tags. This is another step in Facebook's program for external developers, which it kicked off a little over a year ago when it opened up its platform to them.
