mcafee-spam-experiment.jpgYou don't have to be a member of Mensa to predict if you go around asking for spam you'll get it. But that's exactly what security firm McAfee did with its Spam Experiment conducted in April. The test asked 50 people from ten countries to defy common sense and for 30 days surf the Web on a computer with no anti-spam software. Participants were encouraged "to go where most Internet users would not dare" in an effort to see what would happen. Guess what, they were spammed.

The Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment (MICE) project, an accelerator research experiment for a major component of a future neutrino factory, has achieved an important milestone with the successful transport of muons along the MICE muon beamline. The international team can now turn its attention to tuning the beam and working towards the demonstration of ionization cooling.

bednarz writes "For Tracy Mooney, a married mother of three in Naperville, Ill., the decision to abandon cyber-sense and invite e-mail spam into her life for a month by participating in a McAfee experiment was a bit of a lark. The idea of the Spammed Persistently All Month (S.P.A.M.) experiment — which fittingly started on April Fool's Day — was to have 50 volunteers from around the world answer every spam message and pop-up ad they got. Mooney was game, especially since McAfee was giving a free PC to all participants. She told her story to Network World."

KentuckyFC writes "There are enough loopholes in the general theory of relativity to allow antimatter to fall up rather than down in a gravitational field. We've never been able to make enough of the stuff to do the experiment. But at the European particle physics laboratory at CERN, where scientists have been refining the technique for making antihydrogen, researchers are designing an experiment called AEGIS that will finally settle the matter. The idea is simple — fire a beam of antihydrogen atoms and watch which way they fall — but the details are fiendish (abstract). The answer should help solve a number of important conundrums such as why there is so little antimatter in our part of the universe and what the value of the cosmological constant is.

D Ninja writes "Yesterday, Google released Gmail Labs, which allows Gmail developers to decide what to include in the next feature releases of Gmail based on user feedback. As ZDNet has pointed out, essentially users are guinea pigs for these new features. Participants will vote on their favorite new features, and the ones that are voted the highest will stick around and the ones that are least popular will disappear." Reader physman_wiu points out an article at the BBC about the experiments on offer, writing: "Some of the features are really nice — like the option to use additional star icons, mouse gestures, and custom keyboard shortcuts. Others ... well, let's just say Old Snakey made it in."
