nerdyH writes "The Linux-Embedded discussion list has been abuzz the last two days over a flash filesystem designed to support binary code execution (sometimes called XIP, or "execute-in-place"). When combined with forthcoming "Phase Change Memory" products from Intel/ST JV Numonyx, the "Advanced XiP Filesystem" (AXFS) could radically change Linux systems of all kinds, replacing Flash, hard drives, and even DRAM with a single chunk of low-cost, non-volatile memory that can both store files and serve as a platform for program execution."

The great difficulty in thread debugging is the lack of predictability and certainty in application behaviour. For a single-threaded application that is given the same application input, the behaviour will be the same for every execution, which makes tracking down unexpected behaviour quite easy. For a multi-threaded application, behaviour can be different even if user input is constant, because the order in which threads are scheduled for execution will vary each time the application is executed, potentially causing a much wider range of possible behaviours for the same input.

An anonymous reader writes "Firefox 3.0.1 was released today. It fixes 3 security vulnerabilities, including a critical issue reported by Billy Rios, Ben Turner, and Dan Veditz. The issue could be combined with an issue in Apple's Safari browser to read data from the user's disk or to execute arbitrary code. This issue was previously discussed on Slashdot. The release also fixes a remote code execution bug involving the CSS reference counter, reported by the Zero-Day Initiative (previously discussed on Slashdot here), as well as a Mac-only potential code execution bug involving GIF image rendering, reported by Drew Yao of Apple Product Security."

Unless you've discretely shut it off in your browser (and most likely you haven't) you're running JavaScript scripts all the time as you web surf. They're delivered with the rest of the code on a webpage and executed on your computer. That's why it's called a client-side programing language--you, the client, run it.
