Hollywood is a machine. Every week, every month and every year countless films are released into theatres and not every one is as successful as the studio heads would hope. Sometimes the publicity machine was askew, sometimes the movie targeted an odd demographic, sometimes the release was steamrolled by a much larger movie and occasionally the movie is flat out bad.

Hugh Pickens writes "The Guardian has an interesting story on Vint Cerf, the 'father of the internet,' in which he says there's no silver bullet for scammers, spammers and criminals running zombie networks and porn-to-porn file swapping because 'the internet was designed that way.' Cerf adds, 'Like every medium, the internet can be abused. When we think about it, we can commit fraud locally and internationally using the telephone system and postal service.' However, Cerf is also convinced that it's the internet's openness — in allowing people with new ideas to do their thing without getting anyone's permission — that is the main source of its power, and he is against the idea of a two-tier internet with a trusted, controlled 'overnet' for commercial and business use, and an 'undernet' where anything goes.

Practically every one with an online business model is now referring to their service as cloud computing - starting from your average Joe hosting firm all the way to the SaaS/S+S vendors, every wants to ride the next buzzword wave, and this distorts the cloud computing term all together. Part of the reason being that historically the term "cloud" loosely referred to anything that’s available online/on the Internet. Ask a bunch of geeks and you would get a different explanation of cloud computing from each person (if you ever asked a bunch of people what Web 2.0 is you know what I mean). So how can we qualify if a service is really leveraging the cloud computing model?

"1. Install every font set and allow for every single type of encoding available. If your OS supports it, you should know be able to read Japanese Kanji and Russian, German, French, etc with the proper characters displayed. Still, I'm not sure there's any guarantee that this would always work, or that the benefits of keeping a huge cache of fonts and displays wouldn't end up under-weighing the burden."

Whether you realize it or not, every single one of the more than 170 million web sites that make up the Internet knows something about its visitors. For the simplest sites, this might amount to little more than an IP address – the unique number that identifies every computer connected to the net -- stored in the server’s logs, but even this can sometimes be enough to identify and locate a specific individual. Many sites, however, actively set out to collect and store data about their guests.

Dreamweaver is a great program. And I'm excited about the September 23rd release of CS4. But every good program has issues, and Dreamweaver is no exception. The nice thing is that the folks over at WebAssist have created the best extension for Dreamweaver - SiteAssist. Don't get me wrong, nothing beats a professional designer using his or her native intelligence to create a beautiful and functional site. But SiteAssist can help. I like it primarily because it makes creating sites as easy as with a template, but without the cookie-cutter feel you get from most templated sites. Do you have Dreamweaver extensions that you couldn't live without? (For another example, I love Lorem and More for generating fake text quickly. I install it every time I upgrade Dreamweaver.

MySkippy writes "I've been a software engineer for just over 10 years, and I've seen a lot of different styles of logging in the applications I've worked on. Some were extremely verbose — about 1 logging line for every 2 lines of code. Others were very lacking, with maybe 1 line in 200 devoted to logging. I personally find that writing debug and informational messages about every 2 to 5 lines works well for debugging an issue, but can become cumbersome when reading through a log for analysis. I like to write warning messages when thresholds or limits are being approached — these tend to be infrequent. I log errors whenever I catch one (but I've never put a "fatal" message in my code, because if it's truly a fatal error I probably didn't catch it).
