Kaneria spins out Warwickshire

It was a case of better late then never at Edgbaston as Essex and Warwickshire could finally get onto the field on the third day. Danish Kaneria was no worse off for the wait as he bagged 6 for 48 to dismiss Warwickshire for 154. They'd been 80 for 1 before losing Ian Westwood first ball after lunch. Kaneria worked his way through the middle order, having Jonathan Trott caught at mid-on, Jim Troughton caught behind and four batsmen lbw. Warwickshire omitted one of their spinners, Ant Botha, in favour of an extra seamer for this game and may be considering their judgement after Kaneria's effort. However, the home side's attack did respond positively as they removed both Essex openers before the close. Chris Woakes, the England Under-19 quick bowler, removed Jason Gallian in a tight eight-over spell and Boyd Rankin, in his first match of th

Kent bat first in heavyweight final

An eighth-wicket stand of 68 between Ryan McLaren and Yasir Arafat helped make amends for Kent's top-order failings, after Essex had reduced them to 138 for 7 in the Friends Provident trophy final at Lord's. McLaren's innings alone has given Kent a sniff when capitulation appeared on the cards, but their bowlers will need to match the impressive discipline shown by Essex in dismissing Kent for their second-lowest total of the season.

Salisbury earns Warwickshire promotion

Warwickshire secured promotion, and now need just four points to grab the Division Two title off Worcestershire, after a dramatic final-day, six-wicket victory charge against Essex at Chelmsford. The match appeared to be heading for a draw as John Maunders (107) and Ravi Bopara (133) added 241 for the second wicket. But Ian Salisbury sparked a rapid collapse as Essex lost nine for 69, leaving Warwickshire to knock off 144 in 45 overs. They cruised home with plenty of time to spare, Darren Maddy hitting 63 off 99 balls. However, their real final-day matchwinner was Salisbury, who turned the game on its head, with a spell of 6 for 27 in 11.4 overs. Maunders hit his first Championship hundred and Bopara continued the form he has shown most of the summer with his fourth century.
