Of course, people make mistakes, both large and small, every day, and monitoring and fixing slipups is a regular part of life. Although people understandably would like to avoid serious errors, most goofs have a good side: they give the brain information about how to improve or fine-tune behavior. "XML parses the newer Java language APIs—JAXP, JAXB, JAX-WS, and more—so easily that XML parsing is now a fundamental aspect of Java programming; potential problems arise when abstractions in the higher-level APIs cause a loss of fine-grained control between parser and data interactions. In this article, I'll show you how the Simple API for XML (SAX) delivers an easy-to-use vehicle to deal with those errors, one you can use even when you're not using SAX directly."

Wired is running a story about a case the Supreme Court will be hearing on Tuesday that relates to searches based on erroneous information in government databases. In the case of Herring vs. US 07-513, the defendant was followed and pulled over based on a records indicating he had a warrant out for his arrest. Upon further review, the local county clerk found the records were in error, and the warrant notification should have been removed months prior. Unfortunately for Herring, he had already been arrested and his car searched. Police found a small amount of drugs and a firearm, for which Herring was subsequently prosecuted. Several friend-of-the-court briefs have been filed to argue this case, some calling for "an accuracy obligation on law enforcement agents [PDF] who rely on criminal justice information systems," and others defending

Bugs in earlier versions of Firefox 3 were said to have been crashing the software, sometimes generating memory corruption at the same time; Mozilla comments that while no threats have emerged, the potential existed for launching arbitrary code, such as malware. Two of these bugs -- found in the image rendering code -- were discovered by Drew Yao of Apple Product Security.

When developing data-driven software, it is often vital that you manage transactions to ensure that unexpected errors do not corrupt the database. Transactions allow you to group sets of related database calls in a single, logical unit-of-work. The classic example of debiting one bank account, then crediting another, is often used to illustrate the importance of transactions. If the process blows up somewhere in the middle, you want everything put back as it was initially. It is the 'all or nothing' principle.

ttsiod recommends a blog entry in which he details steps to apply Reed-Solomon codes to harden data against errors in storage media. Quoting: "The way storage quality has been nose-diving in the last years, you'll inevitably end up losing data because of bad sectors. Backing up, using RAID and version control repositories are some of the methods used to cope; here's another that can help prevent data loss in the face of bad sectors: Hardening your files with Reed-Solomon codes. "Given that customers mostly use the Help system when they are already frustrated by our software, we should always see to it that such errors do not exist in our help system. To do this, we will write a tool, HelpGenerator, that generates some of the boilerplate XML in the help system and checks the HTML and index files for the problems listed above. We will also build tools for displaying and testing the contextual help. We've re-engineered and improved these tools and present them in this article.
