This is the first picture of the spectacular re-entry of Jules Verne, the Automated Transport Vehicle that fell from orbit today at 9:31AM Eastern time. Taken from a DC-8, it shows the moment in which it starts to break at 9:43AM, just before falling into the Pacific Ocean. Apparently, the show was amazing because this thing was gigantic. Check its scale compared to the Apollo and a Progress capsule. Update: More pictures coming in now.

With this entry, my week of handling the GameDev.Net daily comes to an end. Starting next week, you'll be seeing a new contributor for each day of the week. I'll be back to torture your minds on Tuesday. For Monday, our very own Ravuya will be writing an entry up, assuming he can pull himself away from obsessing about what car he's going to buy for a few seconds. That should lead to a more varied experience from the Dailies than my continued edgy continuation of mittens' edgy edginess.

flosofl writes "Matthew Paul Thomas has an entry on his blog called Why Free Software Has Poor Usability, And How To Improve It. While this advice is helpful and may indeed lead to improvements in many open source programs, the guidelines may be much more difficult for smaller projects. From the entry, 'Free Software has a long and healthy tradition of "show me the code." But when someone points out a usability issue, this tradition turns into "patches welcome," which is unhelpful since most designers aren't programmers. And it's not obvious how else usability specialists should help out.'" Thomas has been developing the ideas in this essay for years. The critique is comprehensive, listing 15 challenges in the way software projects, and in particular free software projects, are structured, with suggestions for improving each one.

A spectacular video recorded on September 29 shows the Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle plunging through Earth's atmosphere and breaking apart. It doesn't take long for the action to start — about 7 seconds into the video, there's a bright flash — which portrays the demise of the first and very successful space station freighter ship built by the European Space Agency. Two observation teams were chasing Jules Verne, in two separate aircraft, taking video and images. This video shows the spacecraft breaking up over the Pacific Ocean beginning at about 15:36 CEST. Below are more images, too:
