LAHORE: An election tribunal consisting of Justice M Bilal of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday adjourned hearing till October 23 on an election petition filed by a PPP candidate challenging Moonis Elahi's election from PP-110. Petitioner Nasir Mahmood Samma submitted that he contested against Moonis on the ticket of the PPP while Imranullah was the candidate of the PML-N from the same constituency. He alleged that Gujrat district government of the PML-Q fully supported Moonis and rigged the election. He said his voters were threatened with dire consequences for voting in his favour. He said out of total 127 poling stations, he (Samma) won from 108 poling stations but through rigging Moonis was declared as winning candidate.

As I write this the 2008 US Presidential election looms closely on the horizon. This is my main reason for writing this at this time, but I made it more broad so you can use these ideas for any kind of election page you may be creating, either now or in the future. Presidents are not the only people elected to office and so this was written to be relevant for any election you may be interested in writing about.

palegray.net writes "Voting machines in several critical swing states are causing major problems for voters. A Government Accountability Office report and Common Cause election study [PDF] has concluded that major issues identified in the last presidential election have not been corrected, nor have election officials been notified of the problems. How long can we afford to trust our elections to black box voting practices? From the article: 'In Colorado, 20,000 left polling places without voting in 2006 because of crashed computer registration machines and long lines. And this election day, Colorado will have another new registration system.'"

Gottesser writes "Bev Harris over at Black Box Voting has done everyone a favor and released her 2008 Election Protection toolkit as an ebook. It's like Cliff notes of Bev's 8+ years of experience on the front lines of the modern voting rights movement. The ebook presents succinct information to get individuals actively involved in the full-contact sport that is democracy. The target audience is those who believe that the political process requires more than just showing up to vote once every four years those who know that something's up with those voting machines. You may remember Bev Harris from her Emmy-nominated HBO documentary 'Hacking Democracy.' I've been working on election integrity issues in Ohio for some time now and have met Bev several times.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) wants the FCC to act on the “white spaces” issue before Novemberâs election, WSJ reports. Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), Dell, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Google are just some the companies that want unlicensed access to the vacant TV channels for high-speed wireless services, but broadcasters and wireless-microphone manufacturers have fought against any such move. At a briefing in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Wireless Innovation Alliance, a lobbying group comprised of the aforementioned companies and others, Google co-founder Larry Page said: âAll the FCC needs to say is that we will allow people to use the spectrum in an unlicensed way if their devices donât interfere.â FCC tests on white-space devices turned up some problems during the summer, but more complete details will be presented to the FCC

With our election barely two weeks away, to be followed three weeks later by the U.S. election, and with our five party leaders having debated on the same day as the two U.S. presidential contenders were scheduled to debate, perhaps we can be excused some cynicism, mixed with hope, plus a dash of weariness.
