Thin elastic membranes supported on a much softer elastic solid or a fluid deviate from their flat geometries upon compression. We demonstrate that periodic wrinkling is only one possible solution for such strained membranes. Folds, which involve highly localized curvature, appear whenever the membrane is compressed beyond a third of its initial wrinkle wavelength. Eventually the surface transforms into a symmetry-broken state with flat regions of membrane coexisting with locally folded points, reminiscent of a crumpled, unsupported membrane. We provide general scaling laws for the wrinkled and folded states and proved the transition with numerical and experimental supported membranes. Our work provides insight into the interfacial stability of such diverse systems as biological membranes such as lung surfactant and nanoparticle thin film

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Elastomeric (i.e. elastic) proteins are able to withstand significant deformations without rupture before returning to their original state when the stress is removed. Consequently, these proteins confer excellent mechanical properties to many biological tissues and biomaterials. Depending on the role performed by the tissue or biomaterial, elastomeric proteins can behave either as springs or shock absorbers. Recent scientific work in Canada resulted in the engineering of the first artificial chameleon elastomeric proteins that mimic and combine these two different behaviors into one protein. Under the regulation of a molecular regulator, these designer proteins exhibit one of the two distinct mechanical behaviors – spring or shock absorber – which closely mimic the two extreme behaviors observed in naturally occu

My friend Susan, who has very discriminating—and generally pretty fancy—taste, had on the chicest Mary Janes the other day. In cream-colored leather with a wide black elastic strap, they might be the most sophisticated take on this style I'd ever seen. The graphic palette and minimalist aesthetic are so cool and artsy, yet totally wearable, and Susan swears that with their cushioned rubber soles and ultra-soft leather uppers, they're also the most comfortable pair of shoes she's ever owned. I braced myself for her to tell me they were by some expensive big-name label, but as it turns out they're made by Camper, and happily, clock in at a relatively reasonable $140.
