Has eBay Reached the Limit of the Network Effect?

The network effect, an effect famously exploited by AT&T’s (T) predecessor Bell Telephone’s president, Theodore Vail, to achieve monopoly power (one telephone is useless, but if everyone has one, it’s priceless), has been a dominant business model for internet companies for over a decade. eBay (EBAY) is no exception, owing its success of its online auctioning business to that same effect (the more buyers and sellers trade on eBay, the more valuable the site becomes to its users, and the less inclined they are to go someplace else), and earning “de facto monopoly” status—or so it seems. However, it appears that the only thing that is keeping eBay alive anymore is that network effect, which may be drowning it at the same time.

On the Effect of Low-Energy Electron Induced DNA Strand Break in Aqueous Solution: A Theoretical Study Indicating Guanine as a Weak Link in DNA

In this theoretical study we have investigated the effect of low-energy electrons attached onto a 3′-guanine monophosphate, 3′-GMP, in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. DFT calculations with B3LYP/DZP++ were performed to study the C3′−O3′ bond break of a 3′-GMP radical anion. Our results show that low-energy electrons, if attached to a 3′-GMP with a neutrally charged phosphate group, can easily induce a C3′−O3′ bond break in both the gas phase and aqueous solution. The activation energy was found here to be 10.3 kcal/mol in the gas phase and, even lower, 5.3 kcal/mol in aqueous solution. In comparison with calculated activation energies for other nucleotides the 3′-GMP has the lowest energy barrier in aqueous solution.

Artificial Lotus Effect: Carbon nanotubes with nanoscopic paraffin coating form superhydrophobic, self-cleaning surfaces

Never wash your car again? Never clean your windows? These may well become reality if it becomes possible to produce the right coatingscoatings that imitate the self-cleaning effect of the lotus blossom.

Firefox's Effect On Other Browsers

An anonymous reader points out an interview with Mozilla's "evangelist," Christopher Blizzard, regarding the future of Firefox and how it affects other browsers. It's an Austrian site, so forgive the comma abuse. From derStandard: "It's sort of interesting though, part of our strategy is to make sure, that we continue making change and the indirect effect of this is that Microsoft continues to have to do releases, because if we get so far ahead that we're able to drive the platform they are not able to keep up and keep their users. I mean, we have this joke which says "Internet Explorer 7 is the best release we ever did", because they would not have done it, if we would have not built Firefox. And the same is true for Apple, they are doing a lot to keep up with us.

MIT Solves Puzzle Of Meteorite-Asteroid Link

The Yarkovsky effect causes asteroids to change their orbits as a result of the way they absorb the sun's heat on one side and radiate it back later as they rotate around. This causes a slight imbalance that slowly, over time, alters the object's path. But the key thing is this: The effect acts much more strongly on the smallest objects, and only weakly on the larger ones.

Google's stranglehold on search loosens a bit

Although Google claims it has something of a Wal-Mart effect, in that as the economy tightens, users look to spend more wisely and so increase their use of search, the effect seems to have spread to its competitors, Yahoo and Microsoft.

eBay to Tell Shoppers, No Checks or Money Orders

Sellers are saying eBay's ban on checks and money orders is, in effect, a move to a PayPal-only policy - at least for the many sellers who don't have their own credit card merchant account. Buyers may be unaware of the policy that goes into effect during the holiday shopping season - and it's unclear what those shoppers who can't or don't wish to use PayPal and credit cards on eBay will do in response to the policy.

The Google Effect: How the company's shuttle line affects San Francisco...

At a time when so many San Francisco neighborhoods are experiencing a certain sagging in the market — the inevitable aging of the eternal boom — it's interesting to note that a few places have proved themselves strangely resilient. Why some neighborhood markets remain lively while others go into hibernation or fall ill is a matter of constant deconstruction for real estate analysts. Whether they focus on supply vs. demand, industry hype vs. media horror stories, a revitalized shopping area or a new transit hub, it's often difficult to disentangle the myriad factors that influence the worth of a given neighborhood.

Gene domino effect behind brain, pancreatic tumours, scientists report

WASHINGTON - Scientists have mapped the cascade of genetic changes that turn normal cells in the brain and pancreas into two of the most lethal cancers. The result points to a new approach for fighting tumours and maybe even catching them sooner.
