TaeKwonDood writes "Carl Wieman is the 2001 Nobel Prize winner in Physics but what he cares most about is fixing science education. The real issue is, can someone who went through 20 years of science education as a student, lived his life in academia since then and even got a Nobel prize get a fair shake from bureaucrats who like education the way it is — flawed and therefore always needing more money?"

The New York Botanical Garden is often described as a “museum of plants.” With 250 acres; 50 different gardens and plant collections; a preeminent Victorian-era conservatory that is a New York City Landmark; the largest herbarium in the Western Hemisphere, containing over 7 million specimens; and the most important botanical and horticultural library in the world, that might seem self-evident. However, a museum is more than its collections—it is a place where collections are creatively displayed and interpreted in ways that allow visitors to appreciate and learn. As such, education is fundamental to a museum’s mission. Recent exhibitions at the Botanical Garden have brought education to the fore with new and compelling programming, exhibitry, and interpretation.

The controversial Higher Education Act of 2008 has been passed by both the Senate and the House for reauthorization. The law itself is related to the governing of universities and has been around since the 1960s with reauthorization scheduled every five years. However it became highly controversial this time around because of changes requiring college campuses to actively deter illegal p2p sharing on campus. There has been a lot of concern about the financial repercussions that could occur for colleges refusing to police their students in this manner although a representative from the House Education and Labor Committee insists that colleges are only required to inform their students of campus policies and to promote the importance of copyright protection.
