DS, Wii Totally Cooling Off In Japan

Kotaku: In 2006, the DS ruled Japan. (Heck, in 2007, too.) The hardware was hard to come by, and things got so back in 2006 that American DSes were re-imported into Japan to satisfy the demand. Things have tailed off considerably. According to Nintendo’s Q1 FY3/09 statement, DS hardware sales dwindled, moving 580,000 units in Q1 this year. In last year’s Q1, Nintendo moved a staggering 2 million plus DSes. Hardware isn’t the only thing that suffered; DS software sales are down as well. Last year’s Q1, 979,000 units of DS software were sold, compared to this part quarter’s 493,000 units of DS software.

A Widescreen Nintendo DS is "Purely Rumor and Speculation"

Here's the deal. Yesterday an advertisement was floating around showing a Nintendo DS that had bigger, wider screens. They didn't look quite 16x9 as the gaming blogs were claiming, and the whole ordeal could have been a pretty quick Photoshop blunder by a third party software designer. Anyway, a lot of people ended up running the story, so I thought we should let you know about it in the remote case that a.) someone at work was talking about a widescreen DS or b.) it somehow ended up being real. Nintendo has called the device "purely rumor and speculation." I just think it's funny that the DS in the ad is out of battery. [aeropause and eurogamer via kotaku]

Update: Chrono Trigger DS Confirmed

That, my dear friends, is what we in the business like to call "Hope for the Future." In what was looking like it would be a huge slump for the DS, with all the Zeldas and Star Foxes and Advance Wars done and gone, it was looking like the DS was going to end up in a Yankees-like rebuilding year with everyone involved denying this was the case. But Square-Enix has dropped a proverbial bombshell on us with what appears to be a teaser site for a DS installment. Clearly, there isn't any sort of information regarding...anything. No screens, movies, info...or even actually saying that it is, indeed, Chrono Trigger (though the clock and the "CTDS" at the end of the URL suggest it). Expect some info to come up during E3. In the meantime, check out MyGamer for more updates as they come available.

The iPhone is More Powerful Than the DS, But Sucks As a Controller

You know that the iPhone is powerful enough to render 3D games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, as well as various other ones we covered in the marathon review session, but just how powerful is it? How does it compare to actual gaming handhelds like the Nintendo DS and PSP? An EA developer put it this way. On a scale of the three, it's in between the DS and the PSP, but sliding more towards the PSP. That's right. In terms of power, you can expect to see games that look at least as good as the DS once developers get enough (read: more than four months) development time with it.

Pokemon DS Lite Hits US, Only Slightly Embarrassing to Own

The limited-edition Pokemon DS Lite was actually released in Japan back in 2006, but is just now showing up in a Gamestop ad in the US. The flashy, surprisingly mature paintjob features Dialga and Palkia, the two Pokemon—Pokemons? Pokemen?—from the Diamond and Pearl covers. It looks to come with a nice bundle, including carrying case, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DVD "special," a poster of Grovyle and a Pokemon t-shirt. I prefer the even artier Honeybee DS Lite, but if you're dying for some Poke-branding this side of the Pacific, you could do worse than pick this up for the standard $130. [GoNintendo]

New (Not Really) Pokemon Edition Nintendo DS

This “LIMITED EDITION” Nintendo DS is lathered in glorified etchings of the legendary pokemon Palkia and Dialga. Debuted almost two-years ago to match the release of the Pearl and Dimond edition pokemon games in Japan, this not-so-limited edition DS retails at $129.99. However, it does come with a Pokemon Dungeon DVD filled with 22-minutes of hardcore Pokemon action as well as a Grovyle Poster and a T-shirt. With all this for just thirteen easy payments of 9.99, its a deal too good to pass up.
