While I was looking at drives for encryption recently, I also had the chance to look at the latest versions of two of the more popular external portable hard drives: The Seagate FreeAgent Go and the Western Digital My Passport Elite. Both are good examples of the state of the art in traditional drives. They are small external drives that are USB powered, and come with backup and sync software that includes software encryption.

Thanks to their high performance and low power consumption SSDs seem to be all the rage nowadays. Intel is the latest company to step into the market, announcing 2 consumer grade SSDs at IDF today. The 80GB 1.8" X-18M is Intel's entry-level offering, while the 2.5" X-25M boasts 160GB capacity. Both drives are based on multilevel cell technology and should begin shipping in the next 30 days. MrKaos writes "Western Digital seems to be preparing for the onslaught of solid-state drives set to impact its market by developing a 20,000 rpm hard drive. Similar to the VelociRaptor line of drives, the new drives are speculated to be offering lower capacity as a tradeoff for faster seek and write times." This report out of Taipei is the only word on the rumored WD 20K drive. It's said to be a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" enclosure, for efficiency of cooling — the arrangement the Register enjoyed poking fun at when the 10K drive was upgraded last month.

Schunk Intec has now tailored its LEG long-stroke electric gripper to the automation requirements of the packaging industry for lightweight gripping systems with flexible strokes. Developed as a lightweight gripper weighing only 8.8 kg when operated with a single servomotor, the LEG delivers a gripping force of 1140 N and a variable stroke from zero to 568 mm. The side cheeks of the modular system are available in various sizes, as are the connecting elements, guide rails and slides. VMware is still chewing on the data I sent the company yesterday regarding Wednesday evening's S.M.A.R.T. spin-up woes, but further experimentation on my part more definitively points the fundamental 'blame' finger at the company's Fusion v2 virtualization software. I can't get the HDD to throw a S.M.A.R.T. error on system wakeup if Fusion isn't running when I'd previously put the MacBook to sleep. All's also well if Fusion's launched but the Windows XP virtual machine is suspended when the system goes to sleep.
