Basler Launches Driver Package 'pylon for Linux'

Basler presents the first Linux version of the successful pylon driver. This driver package is designed to operate with all Basler GigE Vision cameras. Because of the platform-independent design of pylon's core, all well-known elements of the Windows driver package can be found in this new Linux version as well. This includes, among others, the GigE Vision Filter Driver, the C++ camera API, and the familiar pylon viewer applications.

VIA releases open source Xorg driver

I am very happy to see this! It's one more step that VIA has been working on to improve and show their support for Free Software and Linux. Early verdict: Catalyst 8.10 is going to rock!

So over the weekend I ran some benchmarks with the Catalyst 8.10 RC2 driver that I mentioned in news last week. My first impression? WOW! In testing with a Radeon 4870 512MB I saw double-digit performance improvement in games like Company of Heroes and Lost Planet. On top of that the new driver adds manual fan control adjustment for Radeon 3000 and 4000 series cards. It's definitely a must download driver if you own a Radeon 4800 card.

AMD's OverDrive and CrossFire Come To Linux

twljagflba writes "Since last year AMD has made ATI increasingly Linux friendly by releasing 3D programming guides and helping out the open-source community. At the same time they have been continuing to develop their binary Catalyst driver for the Linux platform and most recently they delivered same-day support for their new graphics cards. Today though they have released the Catalyst 8.8 Linux driver that adds two very important features: CrossFire and OverDrive support for Linux. Linux users are now able to use CrossFire to split the rendering workload between multiple GPUs and they're also able to overclock their graphics cards now using the binary-only driver. Phoronix has a complete run-down on both features — including benchmarks — in their AMD OverDrive on Linux and ATI Radeon CrossFire On Linux articles.

Keeping Older Drivers Behind the Wheel

Hugh Pickens writes "A new study shows the key role technology can play in extending the age at which people can drive safely and highlights the important psychological role that driving plays in older people's lives in contributing to feelings of independence and freedom and maintaining their quality of life. The study identified ideas for in-car information systems to help compensate for the reduction in reaction time that affects many older drivers. Specific recommendations included a head-up display on the windshield that displays road sign information based on GPS position so the driver doesn't have to keep watching the road side for information and a system to provide the driver with audible feedback on their current speed so the driver doesn't have to look at the dashboard so often.
