Stony Stevenson writes "Web traffic volumes will almost double every two years from 2007 to 2012, driven by video and web 2.0 applications, according to a report from Cisco Systems. Cisco's Visual Networking Index (PDF) predicts that visual networking will account for 90 percent of the traffic coursing through the world's IP networks by 2012. The upward trend is not only driven by consumer demand for YouTube clips and IPTV, according to the report, as business use of video conferencing will grow at 35 percent CAGR over the same period." I left the apostrophes around the word "double" in the title because the linked site has them, but for the life of me I can't figure out why.

It seems to be the week for big politics and space exploration. Yesterday, the Universe Today reported that Buzz Aldrin was worried about the future of the politically-driven US space policy; he is currently lobbying US President hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain to increase NASA funding. On the other side of the pond, French President Nicolas Sarkozy also wants NASA's European counterpart, ESA, to do better. However, Sarkozy wants to change the face of the ESA into the NASA model by making it politically driven, rather than leaving European bureaucrats to decide ESA priorities. ESA has operated independently from political pressures that often weigh down on space agencies, but Sarkozy is a huge advocate of the US system and believes space exploration should be politically motivated.

The reporting needs for an organization often can change, requiring updates to existing reports as well as the addition of new reports. Having to update and re-deploy software each time reports are updated or added can quickly become time consuming. Rather than writing custom code for each type of report within the application, the report-specific information can be shifted outside of the core application. This allows an application to adapt to changing and new reports while minimizing the need for code updates. Instead, updates can be made to the database.

Painter Gresham Sykes had me at orange. Some people are suckers for certain colors, and I admit to a weakness for anything falling between red and yellow on the spectrum. The fact that Sykes' current exhibition in the McGuffey Art Center's main gallery also includes intense blues-- from cerulean to azure to teal to cobalt-- is just an intoxicating bonus.
