Don't write off the nuisance hackers just yet

Whenever some expert wants to evangelize about the current state of security, he or she will gush about how the current threat landscape is driven by greedy, profit-driven hackers out to steal your life’s savings right from under your keyboard.

IP Traffic To 'Double' Every Two Years

Stony Stevenson writes "Web traffic volumes will almost double every two years from 2007 to 2012, driven by video and web 2.0 applications, according to a report from Cisco Systems. Cisco's Visual Networking Index (PDF) predicts that visual networking will account for 90 percent of the traffic coursing through the world's IP networks by 2012. The upward trend is not only driven by consumer demand for YouTube clips and IPTV, according to the report, as business use of video conferencing will grow at 35 percent CAGR over the same period." I left the apostrophes around the word "double" in the title because the linked site has them, but for the life of me I can't figure out why.

President Sarkozy and the French (Space) Revolution

It seems to be the week for big politics and space exploration. Yesterday, the Universe Today reported that Buzz Aldrin was worried about the future of the politically-driven US space policy; he is currently lobbying US President hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain to increase NASA funding. On the other side of the pond, French President Nicolas Sarkozy also wants NASA's European counterpart, ESA, to do better. However, Sarkozy wants to change the face of the ESA into the NASA model by making it politically driven, rather than leaving European bureaucrats to decide ESA priorities. ESA has operated independently from political pressures that often weigh down on space agencies, but Sarkozy is a huge advocate of the US system and believes space exploration should be politically motivated.

Cable Driven Robot Assists Patients With Neurological Disorders

Florida Atlantic University has filed a provisional patent for a unique robotic device to assist with the physical rehabilitation process of patients suffering from neurological damages to their upper extremities such as those due to stroke or Parkinson’s disease. Inventors, Dr. Oren Masory, chair and professor of mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and Melissa Morris, FAU engineering graduate student, designed and built the device to aid physical therapists and their patients to retrain injured muscles.

A Database Driven Reporting Application

The reporting needs for an organization often can change, requiring updates to existing reports as well as the addition of new reports. Having to update and re-deploy software each time reports are updated or added can quickly become time consuming. Rather than writing custom code for each type of report within the application, the report-specific information can be shifted outside of the core application. This allows an application to adapt to changing and new reports while minimizing the need for code updates. Instead, updates can be made to the database.

iPhone NXT Every once in a while, we stumble upon something that's just cool. It serves no practical use, and there is no reason for anyone to ever create it; it's just plain neat. Today is one of those days.

Create cross-platform database-driven applications with JDBC

One of Java's most powerful APIs is the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) interface. This module offers a unified interface to different databases, providing a series of generic functions that are internally translated into native function calls.

ART FEATURE- Unblocked color: Sykes is driven to abstraction

Painter Gresham Sykes had me at orange. Some people are suckers for certain colors, and I admit to a weakness for anything falling between red and yellow on the spectrum. The fact that Sykes' current exhibition in the McGuffey Art Center's main gallery also includes intense blues-- from cerulean to azure to teal to cobalt-- is just an intoxicating bonus.

Ebb and Flow of Sea May Have Driven Mass Extinctions: Study

A new study by U.S. researchers suggests that the ocean, in particular the epic ebbs and flows of sea level and sediment over the course of geological time, is the primary cause of the world's periodic mass extinctions over the past 500 million years.
