Beijing - More than 40 Olympic athletes have downloaded a Tibet album called "Songs for Tibet" to show solidarity with the Himalayan people's struggle for more freedom, according to a Tibetan rights group. The athletes downloaded the songs as part of a project to highlight the plight of Tibetans, who are subjected to religious restrictions from the government and an encroachment by Han Chinese in their Himalayan homeland.

Piracy is an ongoing problem in almost every industry nowadays, not the least of all, the gaming industry. According to Ubisoft, after Assassin's Creed was leaked six weeks early, the pirated version was downloaded over 700,000 times, costing it millions of dollars. But instead of going after those that downloaded the game, Ubisoft is doing the smart thing and going against the company responsible for the leak. Optical Experts Manufacturing (OEM) was contracted by Ubisoft to reproduce copies of the game disc, and Ubisoft set strict security procedures OEM had to follow. OEM ignored these secruity procedures and allowed an employee to bring a disc home, ultimately resulting in the employee uploading it to the web. Ubisoft claims it tracked the earliest iterations of the pirated game to the home of an OEM employee, and after an investigatio

It's funny how things work out sometimes - I took the screen sht above to illustrate how much I like the a-la-carte approach to music. Sarah McLachlan, one of my favourite female singer/songwriters, just released a double-disc best of album. I fired up the Zune software and compared all the songs I already owned, then purchased all the ones I didn't. Seemed perfect to me - until I realized that after purchasing seven total songs, only one had downloaded. I was using Firefox 3.0.3 to make the purchases, and each time I clicked on BUY MP3 I was given a download prompt for a file that would trigger the Amazon MP3 downloader - which is a bit odd, since usually single tracks are downloaded direclty as MP3 files. I checked the Task Manager, and the Amazon MP3 downloader process was running, but it was pegged at 25% CPU use - meaning it was lock

I’ve downloaded a series of iPhone developer videos from the iTunes U section of the iTunes Store. iTunes has considerately created a playlist for each series within a folder. But I’m not sure how to sync the movies because when I mount my iPhone and choose it within iTunes, I don’t see these playlists listed within the Music or Video tabs. How can I sync these things?

"Yesterday, I downloaded the KDE Live CD edition (mandriva-one-2009-KDE4-int-cdrom-i586.iso). When the download was done a few hours later, I was excited-enough to immediately test-drive it via VMWare Server that was installed on my Xubuntu desktop. So what makes Mandriva 2009 so special? What’s not to like about it? Here’s a little walkthrough, plus later on my initial impressions."

HD versions of TV episodes downloaded from the iTunes Store are being overwritten for some users, Apple support discussion shows. Whenever users buy an HD version of a program, iTunes downloads the HD copy first, followed by an SD version. While the software is meant to keep both side-by-side, the SD version appears to be overwriting the earlier one, leaving shoppers without the video they originally paid for. The problem also appears to be inconsistent, affecting some episodes in a download queue but not others.

IconI considered reviewing Debian for this article. I downloaded a copy of Debian 3.0r2, making sure to get the disk with the 2.4 kernel. Everything you've heard about Debian being difficult to install? It's not totally true, but it's pretty close. I really wanted to try Debian, though, if only to use the vaunted apt-get system. I'd tried apt-rpm on a previous Red Hat installation, and it was great. Since Debian was turning out to be too difficult to put together, I decided to look for a debian-based distro.
