On Thursday, August 14 after-hours, Harman International Industries, Inc. (HAR) reported Q4 net income of $31.7 million or $0.54 per share on $1.07 billion in revenue vs. $105 million or $1.58 per share a year ago, down 70% (see earnings call transcript). Excluding items (restructuring, merger and tax related), HAR reported $0.68 per share vs. $0.98 per share a year ago, down 31%. Analysts expected $0.77 per share, widely missing expectations by $0.09 per share. Share on August 12 opened at $38.60, 10% lower, and drifted down throughout the day, closing at $37, down $6 or 14%.

Microsoft's Xbox Live was taken down Monday for maintenance as the service gets ready for the new Xbox experience. However, Techradar.com reports that the down time does not mean that Xbox Experience will launch Tuesday when Xbox Live is back online. The new release will continue to be unvailable until later in the year.

Wal-Mart shuts down DRM servers Just like almost every other DRM-based music store before them, Wal-Mart has announced that they will be shutting down their DRM servers as of October 9th, killing off any music you have purchased from the retailer, unless you burn the music to CD and then rip it back DRM-free.

Tandy Leather Factory, Inc. (AMEX: TLF) reported today that sales for the month of September were $4.0 million, down 4% from September 2007 sales of $4.2 million. Year-to-date sales are down 4% at $39.4 million in the current year from $40.9 million last year. The veiled threat to shut down iTunes if royalty rates on downloaded songs were hiked has been averted. The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) opted to keep the status quo and turned down a request to increase royalties from 9 to 15 cents on songs bought online. The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) asked for the rise while Apple opposed it and said it could result in iTunes being shut down.
