MCC have moved to distance themselves from the document, co-authored by their chief executive Keith Bradshaw and leaked on Friday, which proposed an English 20-over tournament based on Indian lines and nine franchises. The club are insisting that Bradshaw was acting in his capacity as a member of the England and Wales Cricket Board, not as a representative of the club.

The success of NASA's Phoenix lander has capped a decade of robotic derring-do and discoveries by uncovering chips of ice on the barren surface of the Red Planet's north pole. The find proves the existence of water, a key ingredient of life.

carusoj writes "Former black-hat hacker Noah Schiffman details why DARPA's National Cyber Range project is bound to fail. The NCR is proposed as a simulation of the Internet, including replicating 'human behavior and frailties.' Schiffman argues that if the Defense Department is really building something of this scope, it might as well use the actual Internet."

"A Linux virus is doomed from early conception and there's a rough jungle awaiting. For an ELF binary file to get infected by a virus, the malicious program has to first get write access to other binaries. Prior to that, it must somehow disguise itself. Binary-only applications are so rare in the Linux world that any software not designed by a major developing firm is subject to inquiry."

IF YOU were unfortunate enough to experience one of the universe's most powerful explosions up close, you would certainly be doomed. But would the blast obliterate you with jets like something from a flamethrower or with cannonball-like projectiles of plasma? We thought we knew the answer, but now the picture is not so clear.

biscuitfever11 writes "Just two months ago it seemed that Bletchley Park, the home of Station X, Britain's secret code-breaking base during the War, was doomed as the codebreakers' huts rotted and the site fell into disrepair. But today Britain's Lottery Fund is set to step in with a grant to rescue the ailing heritage site. (There was an earlier story on ZDNet.)"

Liz Gunnison has an interesting take on the news that Charles Saatchi has been appointed an advisor to the Art Trading Fund. You might recognise the name: I said twice last summer that it was doomed to fail, and this news only confirms my take. Let's start with the fund's assets under management: in May 2007 it had reportedly raised £10 million (that's pounds); the following month, Kit Roane reported that "it has attracted about $40 million from investors". Now, a year later, we're told that the fund "closed in August 2007, with a capitalization of $10 million". Oops. We're not told how many outside investors there are in the fund, but my guess is that it's somewhere between zero and five.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Very Large Telescope's First Light, ESO is releasing two stunning images of different kinds of nebulae, located towards the Carina constellation. The first one, Eta Carinae, has the shape of a 'little man' and surrounds a star doomed to explode within the next 100 000 years. The second image features a much larger nebula, whose internal turmoil is created by a cluster of young, massive stars.

A sharp-eyed Mars orbiter snapped an image of sister probe Phoenix descending through Martian skies toward a polar landing site to search for water and assess conditions for life, mission managers said yesterday. Phoenix touched down at 4:53 pm PDT (7:53 p.m. EDT/2353 GMT) on Sunday, becoming the first spacecraft to reach a polar region of Mars. Problems during descent doomed NASA's first polar lander in 1999.

A brilliant unbeaten 99 off 66 balls by Ryan ten Doeschate earned Essex a tie with Leicestershire in a NatWest Pro40 thriller at Grace Road. The Netherlands international hit 12 runs off the last three balls to see the Eagles equal Leicestershire's 255 for six for the loss of eight wickets. Both sides scored 93 runs off the final 10 overs of their innings yet Essex seemed doomed as they went into the last over still needing 16.

PHPNerd writes "In a bold move to connect with the next generation of young British voters, the House of Lords has launched a YouTube video series that will detail what it does and make it more accessible to the younger generation. It accompanies an experimental blog in which various Lords write about political issues and can receive feedback from anyone around the world. The article quotes spokesman Owen Williams saying, 'We're trying to engage with younger people and people who may not be interested in politics. We looked at YouTube because it appeals to people outside the political elite.' Is this doomed to failure, or should more governments be doing something similar?"
