discounts: search
With the economy in the shape its in, online retailers are using e-mail to notify shoppers of discounts and deals. While I am all for discounts, Im not sure how much people like getting spammed for discounts. How many of these end up in spam filters anyhow because they look like spam / phishing mail? Do you guys go for e-mail notifications when it comes to sales?

Apple may launch most aggressive Black Friday pricing yet--AppleInsider: On a day when the stock market tanked once again on news of shifting priorities in the government's bailout plan, coupled with pessimistic forecasts from huge retailers like Best Buy, this notion doesn't seem all that far-fetched. Last year, Apple offered $101 discounts on MacBooks and other discounts on iPods on Black Friday, and Ben Reitzes of UBS thinks similar discounts could be applied more broadly across Apple's product line on that particular day.

BeachBoysLargeApple may be a great company that sells terrific products, but there is one area in which it does not excel: giving discounts. Black Friday sales only trimmed prices from 5% to 10%--not much of a bargain.

Shares of eBay Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and other online retailers fell on "Cyber Monday" yesterday as analysts worried that deep discounts from traditional retailers may have stolen the thunder from their online-only rivals, known for lower pricing. Shopping traffic online typically rises on the Monday after the U. S. Thanksgiving holiday, as consumers seek better bargains than they found in brick-and-mortar stores over the weekend. But this year's Cyber Monday was expected to be somewhat muted, because worried retailers were already advertising deep discounts online and in stores even before the U. S. Thanksgiving weekend. Ebay shares closed down US90ยข, or 4.8%, at US$12.23, while Amazon's stock was off US$2.23, about 2.2%, at US$40.47. Forrester Research expects Web sales to increase about 12% for the holiday shopping season in November

It's a make-it or break it time for retailers. The holiday selling season is always a critical time for retailers, but this year this may be even more true. With several retailers already falling victim to a drop in consumer spending, and filing for bankruptcy, retailers will be navigating through some tricky waters. Consumers are strapped for cash due to high energy and food prices, and unemployment is rising. The recent credit crunch has made it more challenging for retailers and consumers to borrow.
