Bank crisis chills London Christmas party mood

LONDON (Reuters) - Christmas cheer for London's bankers is disappearing as fast as City jobs this year.

Israeli company leading next generation of solar technology

Silicon panels, the first generation, rely on a rapidly disappearing natural ingredient that has become more and more expensive as supply dwindles. Thin film, the second generation, which does not use silicon, is nevertheless prohibitively expensive to build.

Google kills SearchMash as SearchWiki emerges

Washington: While there is plenty of buzz around Google’s new SearchWiki, another Google experiment is quietly disappearing: SearchMash. Once located at SearchMash.com, the service was Google’s experimental search interface, a non-branded search engine that Google used to test new technology.

Siberian Mouth

A comedic take on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights" in which the Siberian tundra, a disappearing fiance, a czar's bizarre taste for imperiled animal hybrids and a shared ferocious independence hinder a would-be couple in their search to discover a cure for shared loneliness.

Wi-Fi Linux Network Bug Found, Fixed

"As more and more native Linux drivers for hardware appear, this kind of problem should start disappearing. NDISwrapper works by loading a Windows driver for the hardware and then using a NDIS APIs (Network Driver Interface Specification Application Programming Interface) wrapper to bridge the gap between Linux and the driver. This, as you might imagine, works but it can lead to system problems. This isn't the first time that NDISwrapper has given Linux users heartburn."

Panasonic Buys Up Sanyo, Makes Japan's Biggest Electronics Co

It's been tentative for a while, but the Nikkei is reporting that Panasonic and Sanyo have come to an agreement, and Pansonic's buying up Sanyo. The actual act should be completed by April next year, and will result in one mega-corporation with revenues over Â¥11.2 trillion (around $1.1 billion)—sounds like enough money to build quite a few mega-robots, or at least several mega-TVs. As part of what will be Japan's biggest electronics company, Sanyo won't be disappearing as a brand though, and Panasonic apparently intends to retain most of Sanyo's employees. [Bloomberg]

Divide and Conquer: Open Source and SaaS Take on Enterprise Software

Enterprise software is under attack. Traditional infrastructure players like BEA are seeing their core products replaced with free open source projects, while traditional application vendors like Oracle/Siebel are being displaced by SaaS. But is this a slugfest with only one winner? Will SaaS and open source ultimately turn against each other for dominance of the software business model - WWF Smack Down style - where the once united tag team, after conquering their opponent, starts to fight between themselves? Actually I think not. Just as I don't see traditional enterprise software disappearing completely, I believe both SaaS and open source are naturally suited to different parts of the market and in fact will coexist quite naturally.

MP3-Playing, Photo Frame Skull Belt Buckle is Gothic Gadget Wrongness

Sadly this doesn't have "I am become death, the bringer of MP3s" inscribed upon it—it'd chime nicely with the ohmygod tackiness of the Digital Skull Belt Buckle. It's in fact so terrible it's wonderful: A metal belt-buckle in the shape of a skull with interchangeable modules in a cutout in the forehead. One's a cheesy flashing LED light panel, the other's a 1GB MP3 and video media-player that can also be a digital photoframe and comes with headphones. Passers-by will see your headphone cable disappearing apparently into your nether regions, but maybe you'll see that as a plus. There's no pricing info, but it's out "soon" gothic gadget fans.
