If you saw the movie “Akeelah and the Bee,” you just might remember the scene when Akeelah and her spelling mentor gaze at a sculpture of Frederick Douglass before the big spelling showdown. The artist who did the sculpture, Tina Allen, has died. Allen’s ex-husband says she died at a Los Angeles hospital from complications of a heart attack. She was 58.
