Dhoni carries forward Ganguly's flame

Exactly eight years to the day since he first captained India in a Test, against Bangladesh in Dhaka, Sourav Ganguly marshalled the resources one last time. The ninth Australian wicket had fallen and the fielders were hovering around Cameron White and Mitchell Johnson with Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra having scripted a dramatic post-lunch collapse. It was a remarkable gesture from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and it said much about how quickly he has grown into the job. A less secure man would have wanted to hog the limelight, but by ceding space to one of Indian cricket's all-time greats for a couple of overs, Dhoni showed just how aware he was of the bigger picture.

You don't mess with Dhoni's fans

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is currently the blue-eyed boy of Indian cricket. The World Twenty20 win last year, the eye-popping IPL salary, the victory against world-beating Australia in the recent Test series - it seems he can do no wrong. So when he was asked by the Ranchi District Arms Magistrate to produce a character certificate before he could get a gun licence, a section of his fans were outraged. "A great son of India has been insulted by this demand for a character reference," they said and effigies of the local magistrate were burnt during a demonstration demanding that the licence be issued immediately. Their efforts didn't go in vain; the Ranchi district administration withdrew their request, saying a person of Dhoni's stature needed no reference.

Dhoni plays it straight

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a forthright, straightforward cricketer unburdened by the baggage that generally accompanies a man onto the field, thereby restricting his outlook. At once he is intelligent and simple, aggressive and canny, tough and respectful. He did not come to cricket as a youthful dreamer but as a young street rat. He did not arrive with high expectations or parental pressure or anything of that sort. He was not a favoured youth plucked from the masses and put through the academies and tracksuits and felicitations that await prodigies, condemning most to a life half lived. He enters the arena with one thought in his mind: the uncompromising pursuit of victory. It is a liberating, empowering simplicity. And it is going to take India to the top of the rankings, and without an excess of celebration.
