Q&A: Sun exec ponders OpenSolaris, Linux (ComputerWorld)

What do you do at Sun? I see the OpenSolaris project seems to fall onto your plate. Initially, I was working on OpenSolaris and started Project Indiana, which culminated this week [with] the first version of the OpenSolaris binary distribution. These days, I am running the developer and community marketing organization, so I am responsible for marketing Sun's developer tools, the developer programs like Sun Developer Network and Tech Days Events, our open-source projects and communities. [Also, I do marketing for] StarOffice, OpenOffice, Network.com. So basically anything that relates to the developer community in some way, I run the marketing piece of that.

Google Lists Top 46 Android Applications From Developer Challenge

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) said today that it has picked the top 50 applications from its Android Developer Challenge Part 1, Round 1, which is being used to spur development for its mobile phone operating system, which has not yet become commercially available. The winners were actually determined last week, but today, they are posting a list on the Android Developer Blog. For now, the details are limited to the developer and application names, but apparently, a more extensive listing is on the way. The reason there’s actually only 46 names on the Top 50 is because four participants think what they are doing is so great they needed to remain in stealth.

KDE Developer Quits

"Recently though several KDE developers came right out and asked, 'Does KDE even need (certain) users?' While, Troy Unrau, a KDE developer and perhaps best known as the author of stories for KDE News, opened this can of worm by saying 'This is a rant,' it was soon taken in earnest. Unrau's opinion was quickly seconded by another KDE developer, Jason Harris, who said, 'KDE, like many other open-source projects, doesn't really need users at all, whether they are poisonous or not.' Instead, both Unrau and Harris wanted to see KDE get more developers..."

Open Source Killing Commercial Developer Tools

jexrand recommends an interview with John De Goes in which he argues: "The tools market is dead. Open source killed it." The software developer turned president of N-BRAIN explains the effect that open source has had on the developer tools market, and how this forced the company to release the personal edition of UNA free of charge. According to De Goes, selling a source-code editor, even a very good one, is all but impossible in the post-open source era, especially given that, "Some developers would rather quit their job than be forced to use a new editor or IDE." N-BRAIN's decision is but one in a string of similar announcements from tools companies announcing the free release of their previously commercial development tools.
