The England batsman, Ian Bell, is determined to make the No. 3 position his own once and for all. Bell was elevated to the spot for England's consolation win over South Africa at The Oval, but it is a position he has yet to cement: in 13 matches, he has yet to make a hundred and averages a below-par 33.96.

Detailed in the journal Nature, the research reveals the shape of the Ebola virus spike protein, which is necessary for viral entry into human cells, bound to an immune system antibody acting to neutralize the virus. The structure provides a major step forward in understanding how the deadly virus works, and may be useful in the development of potential Ebola virus vaccines, or treatments for those infected.

Inclusion bodies are insoluble aggregates that are formed by bacteria to store excess recombinant protein produced during expression. The structure of the protein in inclusion bodies is poorly understood but it has been hypothesized that the protein may form misfolded β sheet aggregates. This paper presents an isotopic labeling and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance approach to determine the secondary structure of individual residues within a recombinant influenza virus “FHA2” protein in inclusion bodies. The inclusion bodies were studied either in the context of the unlysed hydrated E. coli cells or in the hydrated pellet formed from centrifugation of the material insoluble in the cell lysate. The native structure of FHA2 is predominantly helical and native helical structure was also observed for several specific residues in the

Two determined 70s from Michael Brown and Chris Benham gave Hampshire a fighting chance in their match against Lancashire on the second day at Old Trafford. Lancashire resumed on 261 for 5, and Francois du Plessis' 57 - his third fifty this season - elevated his side's total to a challenging 357. Imran Tahir, the Hampshire legspinner, removed Gary Keedy to pick up his fifth wicket, but Hampshire were soon in a sticky position at 35 for 3. Saj Mahmood removed Sean Ervine in his first over - only thanks to a stunning catch from du Plessis at point - before John Crawley inexplicably left a straight one from Glen Chapple. After Michael Lumb was out for 9, Brown and Benham set about their recovery mission in contrasting styles, but put on a vital fourth-wicket stand of 139 and remain unbeaten going into the third day.

andmonkey was determined to quit his blog. Sniping away at life and politics in Egypt had become too risky, he said, even under the cover of his anonymous online moniker. Too much of a chance the government thugs would hurt him or someone close to him, or smash his computer equipment. He wasn’t alone in his worry. The dozen or so bloggers who had gathered in the offices of a fledgling Cairo newspaper were freaked out by the four-year prison term given to a twenty-two-year-old former law school student for criticizing President Hosni Mubarak and for “religious incitement.” The blogger had called Mubarak “the symbol of tyranny” and said Muslims who attacked a Coptic Christian church had “revealed their true ugly face.” He had blasted Al-Azhar University, a revered center of Islamic learning, as “the other face of the coin of
