West Nile virus detected in Canadian birds

Toronto - The potentially deadly West Nile virus has been detected in early tests of two dead birds found in the province of Ontario, which could mark the first time the virus has made its way into Canada.

NASA Mars Lander Sees Falling Snow, Soil Data Suggests Liquid Past

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has detected snow falling from Martian clouds. Spacecraft soil tests experiments also have provided evidence of past interaction between minerals and liquid water, processes that occur on Earth. A laser instrument designed to gather knowledge of how the atmosphere and surface interact on Mars, detected snow from clouds about 2.5 miles above the spacecraft's landing site. Data show the snow vaporizing before reaching the ground. "Nothing like this view has ever been seen on Mars," said Jim Whiteway, of

Mars Lander Sees Falling Snow

Riding with Robots writes "NASA reports that the Phoenix Mars Lander has detected snow falling from Martian clouds. According to the Canadian team running a weather experiment, a laser instrument designed to study how the atmosphere and surface interact on Mars has detected snow from clouds about 4 kilometers above the landing site. Data shows the snow vaporizing before reaching the surface, but one of the mission scientists said, 'We'll be looking for signs that the snow may even reach the ground.' Spacecraft soil experiments have also provided evidence of past interaction between minerals and liquid water."

Scientists: Martian soil may be harsh to life

This undated image provided by NASA shows the Phoenix spacecraft's inverted scoop preparing to take soil samples on Mars. NASA's Phoenix spacecraft has detected the presence of a chemically reactive salt in the Martian soil, a finding that if confirmed could make it less friendly to potential life than once believed, according to a report Monday Aug. 4, 2008. How to Use JavaScript to Validate Form Data

This article discusses how to use JavaScript to validate important types of form data, including names, addresses, URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, zip codes, expiration dates and credit card numbers (Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express, in both Canadian and US formats, with either 13, 14, 15 or 16 digit account numbers). Each data validation function returns an array of valid inputs that were detected, and has the ability to filter and reformat data to desired appearances and standards. If no valid input is detected, then an error code is returned. In addition to providing definitions for each error code number, the JavaScript form validation script also provides associated human-readable error messages which explain the error after it has occurred.

Universal Surface Scanner Detected

mcgrew writes to tell us that scientists at the University of California, San Diego, have created a new system that can test any surface for just about anything. "Their idea uses a thin layer of metal drilled with nanoscale holes, laid onto the surface being tested. When the perforated plate is zapped with laser light, the surface plasmons that form emit light with a frequency related to the materials touching the plate. A sensitive light detector is needed to measure the frequency of light given off. The team says devices using this approach can be small and portable, will work on very low power, and could detect everything from explosives to bacteria. All that needs to be done now is build a system able to decode the light signatures."

Cosmic Dark Flow Detected Billions Of Light Years Away

Using data from NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), scientists have identified an unexpected motion in distant galaxy clusters. The cause, they suggest, is the gravitational attraction of matter that lies beyond the observable universe.

Beware fake virus protection

PandaLabs has detected an increase the use of fake antivirus products to infect users with malware. Often appearing on the Internet as free downloads, these applications pass themselves off as antivirus utilities; alternatively they can be concealed in other files downloaded by users, including music or video files.

Detecting quantum dots in the dark

Researchers at ETH Zurich have detected the light absorption by a single quantum emitter under ambient conditions for the first time. The technique can image emitters in the "quenched" state, help directly observe single biological macromolecules without the need for fluorescence labelling and might enable applications in biology, such as sensing.

London, Sept 02: Astronomers have detected a giant ring of debris around a nearby star that appears to be a much bigger version of our solar system’s Kuiper belt, which may be swarming with comets.

Mars Lander Finds Perchlorate on Mars

NASA's Phoenix spacecraft has detected the presence of perchlorate, a chemically reactive salt in the Martian soil. Though the finding could mean Mars is less friendly to potential life than previously believed, scientists are optimistic.
