Interestingly, when I've asked this question before, there has been some argument. No, not on whether the customer is more important (most everyone seems to agree on that), but rather on which customer is more important - the client you're designing for or the customer of the website you're designing for the client. When I say customer-centered design I'm not talking about the client. But I do recognize that clients can have vastly different desires from what their customers do, and if you're a freelance designer, serving your clients first is an easier way to keep them paying you. But as SazBean points out in their article Customer-Centric Design - Your Customers Care, so Should You:

Designing a game for consoles is much tougher than PCs, if only for the costly certification testing process that can be daunting to development studios who are accustomed to grabbing extra ketchup packets at lunch just to make soup for dinner. But Sony Europe has completely removed the PS2 certification process in their region, effectively making the PS2 an open platform in much of the world. With 131.3 million PS2s sold worldwide, that's gotta be awfully exciting to at least a few startup studios. As for you, expect the deluge of shovelware from Russia and India any day now. Game makers designing apps for the iPhone and iPod touch have quickly learned to incorporate the built-in accelerometer of those devices into gameplay. Controlling a game by tilting the device is a staple of such premium games as Cro-Mag Rally and Moto Chaser. But that same technology can also be used to great effect in simple games such as BiiBall 3D.

Stuart, Sci/Tech Editor: I recommend first designing and constructing a laser-rangefinding Galvanic Skin Response device. Then, wear a low-cut top/tight pants (if you’re female or male, respectively - not mixing that up is dreadfully important) and... Er, what is it the kids do at “Club L”? Ah yes - rub up against your professor or something. Measuring his/her galvanic skin response post-rubbing should enlighten you as to whether he/she reciprocates your feelings (well, no one is exactly sure what GSR primarily measures, but most will agree that it’s a good indicator of sexual feelings and emotional arousal). And voila, an answer to a pressing interpersonal problem at a minimum of interpersonal interaction! Now that’s better living through science!

Preedit writes "Apple plans to get into the business of designing microprocessors for handheld devices, according to legal papers that are part of a dispute between IBM and one of its top technology executives. IBM is suing Power chip expert Mark Papermaster for allegedly violating a non-compete agreement and accepting a job at Apple. In court papers, IBM claims Apple wants Papermaster 'to design microprocessors for incorporation in a variety of electronic devices, including handheld devices.' The suit, according Infoweek, also notes that Apple earlier this year bought out P.A. Semi. IBM thinks it knows why."
