(CEP News) - Housing prices in the UK continued to decline in September according to a report from the Halifax Bank of Scotland on Thursday who cited a 1.3% month-over-month decline in house prices for September."House prices declined by 1.3% in September. The overall price decrease in the three months to September was very similar to that in the previous quarter, indicating that the trend rate of decline may be beginning to stabilize," according to Martin Ellis, Chief Economist at the BHOS. "The ongoing pressures on householders' income, combined with the reduction in the availability of mortgage finance, however, mean that market conditions will remain challenging."

n his The Decline and Fall of Great Powers, Paul Kennedy argued that, historically, great powers have tended to fall when they undertook financial commitments their economies could not bear. Is the United States reaching a precarious financial position? President Bush, with his huge tax cuts for the rich and the disastrous and costly war in Iraq, has turned the inherited fiscal surplus into a deficit forecasted at $ 400 billion. If the liabilities of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are added to the national debt, as seems ever more probable, it comes to more than the nominal GDP; a significant proportion is owed to foreigners. (This still does not include the unprovided present value of the committed social security obligations of the order of $ 50 trillion!)
