Nintendo has decided to capitalize on America’s obesity epidemic with the launch of Wii Fit. Nintendo began its campaign towards “healthier gaming” when it introduced Wii Sports, which encouraged gamers to get off their behinds and move more than just their fingers while playing video games like tennis or golf. With Wii Fit, they have decided to turn up the heat about 100 degrees.

We're catching up on two stories of municipal engagement with open source software: Munich (which decided to go OS in 2003) and Vienna (2005). E5Rebel brings us news that Munich has stayed the course. But bkingaut informs that Vienna has decided to migrate back to Windows (Google translation) — to Vista no less. The migration of 720 computers used in kindergartens will cost the city about €8M. The given reason for all this is a language test application for the kids that only works with MS IE and won't be made compatible (by the producer) with Firefox until 2009.

Attila Dimedici writes "A Russian man has just been crowned world champion in the sport of chess boxing. Apparently the idea originated in a French comic strip from the early '90s. In 2003 a Dutch artist decided to bring the 'sport' to life. The 'sport' is played by starting a chess match in the middle of a boxing ring. After four minutes, the chess board is cleared and the opponents box for three minutes. A match consists of six rounds of chess and five rounds of boxing. A match is decided by knockout, checkmate, or points."

In December 2007, Microsoft acquired MultiMap, which offers features that are focused on the UK, and created quite quite a stir when it accidentally forced UK users to use it over Live Maps. In mid-April, Ask UK made a surprising move when it switched away from its mapping service and decided to start using Multimap. Ask UK decided that MultiMap was better than Live Maps and Ask Maps, so it rolled out the service on its website.

While much of the focus on "uptime" today was over whether or not various web 2.0/tech sites could handle the onrush of traffic concerning the Steve Jobs/iPhone keynote, it appears that Amazon.com was actually stumbling and having trouble staying up just a few days after its still unexplained Friday meltdown. It's unclear if the two events are related, but given that Amazon is positioning itself to help keep other sites up and running, no matter what the situation, this isn't the sort of ringing endorsement it was probably looking for.

Does this look like a place to buy a Zune? No, we didn't think so, either. It's a GameStop store in Manhattan. The national retail chain is ending its sales of Microsoft's portable media player because of its weak link to gaming.
