You may or may not have an enterprise client, but if you're using Java, you already know that presentation isn't everything: database access is as crucial a design consideration as the interface. The Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) API is your all-purpose link between applications and your databases. Based on Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) technology, JDBC is relational database-friendly and supports SQL. With the correct driver, you can use this API to connect to any database that supports an ODBC interface. Putting it another way, if your application is three-tier, you can use JDBC to create a layer of abstraction between your business logic level and your data level: all you need to slip is a new database in place under your apps as new drivers.

This article is aimed at beginner and intermediate Web developers looking to make the leap into database support of their Web site. The article suggests a new declarative language based on HTML-forms, which is used for development of a database interface. HTML forms can manage not only the creation of a database, but also the execution of requests to the database.

Cristoph Rupp's hamsterdb is a lightweight, embedded database engine designed for ease of use, high performance, stability, and portability. In the database world, you have typically two extremes. On the high end, you have the full-featured and sometimes unwieldy Relational DBMS with SQL and a daemon/server process (such as Oracle). On the low end, there are b+tree-based systems, which are essentially just a database engine that is linked into the application and usually are without SQL support. As a lightweight database engine, hamsterdb fits into the latter category. It is very fast, but only supports the minimum needed operations. Specifically, it is embeddable, and therefore does not have the external dependencies or installation hassles of an SQL server.

Over time, organizations replicate, migrate, or add complexity within database systems, often times losing control of the quality of their data. When applications begin to fail because of invalid, corrupted, or out-of-date data, the free, GPL-licensed Talend Open Profiler can give data analysts, database administrators (DBA), and business users the ability to research data structures and improve data quality. Through the use of Open Profiler, users can be alerted to hidden inconsistencies and incompatibilities between data sources and target applications. Through data analysis, business users and technical analysts can communicate both data structure and content needs.

Open-source middleware maker Continuent has launched a database scale-out stack called Tungsten, which supports open-source databases like MySQL as well as proprietary ones from the likes of Oracle. On Thursday, the company published code for Tungsten Replicator, a master-slave replication tool for MySQL, wrote Continuent CTO Robert Hodges in a blog post. Master-slave replication sees a "master" database sync up with a number of "slaves," allowing a workload to be scaled out. "We started with master/slave replication on MySQL for a very simple reason: We know it well.

CurtMonash writes "I had been a database industry analyst for a decade before I found 1-gigabyte databases to write about. Now it is 15 years later, and the 1-petabyte barrier is crumbling. Specifically, we are about to see data warehouses — running on commercial database management systems — that contain over 1 petabyte of actual user data. For example, Greenplum is slated to have two of them within 60 days. Given how close it was a year ago, Teradata may have crossed the 1-petabyte mark by now too. And by the way, Yahoo already has a petabyte+ database running on a home-grown system. Meanwhile, the 100-terabyte mark is almost old hat. Besides the vendors already mentioned above, others with 100+ terabyte databases deployed include Netezza, DATAllegro, Dataupia, and even SAS.

"...citation management is a deal-maker or breaker for me. How does Writer 3 stack up there? Unfortunately, citation management in Writer 3 remains deficient for at least three reasons. First, the database fields in the bibliographic database are incomplete and non-standard in relation to how things are done in academia today. Certainly one could spend much time customizing the database fields, but the cost-benefit calculus doesn’t make sense to me. It appears that OO.org folks just whipped up something they thought looks reasonable."

Without much effort, you can get Hibernate to generate your database schema automatically, dispensing entirely with SQL scripts. Back in the real world, however, you still need to account for the sometimes obscure naming conventions used by your database administrator. In this article, Java Power Tools author John Ferguson Smart shows you how to generate database schemas automatically with Hibernate while still making your DBA happy.

Traditional B2C database marketing firms are very good at addressing the first two points, but are usually not very good at the others because they lack the necessary operational expertise and methodology and the technical skills to perform complex integrations with front-office systems. This is not surprising. Firms with a B2C focus built their systems and processes for companies that do a large volume of marketing campaigns to large numbers of consumers. Their systems are designed for speed and volume, not for integration.
