holy_calamity writes "An international research group has created the most perfect spheres ever made, in a bid to pin down a definition of the kilogram. It should be possible to count exactly the number of atoms in one of the roughly 9cm silicon spheres to define the unit. Currently the kilogram is defined only by a 120-year-old lump of platinum in Paris, but its mass is changing relative to copies held elsewhere. Other SI units have more systematic definitions."

The Turner prize-nominated artists Jane and Louise Wilson have created a large-scale installation to mark the opening of Derby's new arts centre, the Quad Gallery, this summer. A huge cube structure covered in mirrors and screens, the installation will show films made during the artists' year-long research period into life in the local area, among them a film about a local centre for Bosnian refugees. The artists have also been seeking inspiration for the installation in local industries, working with clock manufacturers Smiths, train engineers Bombardier, and Rolls Royce. "Derby is traditionally a site for migrants," Louise Wilson said, "and its businesses have created some interesting diaspora. We are looking at the ideas of regeneration and local industry.

Fake Steve Jobs, also known as Daniel Lyons (see our interview with him), created a fake blog that quickly became a popular hit in the tech world. Microsoft decided to do something similar with a new blog by the name of i'm talkathon (RSS feed), except that author Parker Whittle is completely fictitious. The blog wasn't created just for the sake of entertainment: the goal is to promote the "i'm Initiative" (which in turn will promote Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Hotmail).
