Best Buy Co. will start selling the iPhone on Sept. 7, becoming first U.S. chain to do so outside of Apple Inc.'s and AT&T Inc.'s own stores. The announcement, expected today expands the availability of Apple's vaunted phone to 970 full-size stores and 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores. It's also a coup for the Minneapolis-based chain, which has been upgrading its cellphone departments. "We had a lot of work to do, obviously, to get in a position where Apple and AT&T would feel good about Best Buy Mobile carrying it, and that's what we've done in the last 18 months," said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile. Best Buy also resells Apple's Mac computers and iPod media players. Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the long-standing relationship between the companies was the reason Best Buy would now be able to sell the iPhone.

With fellow Apple lovers getting their hands on the coveted iPhone 3G earlier this month I guess it was only a matter of time before the dazzling phone hit Indian markets. Rumor has it that the new Apple progeny will be available in India late August or early September through carriers Vodafone and Airtel. Even though some features will be customized to match Indian tariffs, early buzz suggests much of its specs will remain the same as its US counterpart. For the time being, the 8GB model will be the only version made available for the launch. Prices are expected to range between Rs 11,500 and Rs 12,000, though unavailability of 3G and an official announcement might just make this one of those promising but false Chinese (or Indian?) whispers.

It hardly seems like a year since the first-gen iPhone stormed the cellphone market, grabbing Apple a coveted spot in the top ranks of handset manufacturers and redefining the sort of usability people could expect from a touchscreen device. Now, however, the iPhone gets its first significant upgrade; you’d have to have been hiding under a rock to have missed the news that Apple have added both 3G and GPS to the handset - if you were, check out our WWDC 2008 keynote coverage - as well as dropping the entry price to just $199. The iPhone 3G launched this morning, and we were there bright and early to cover the event of a new cellphone.
