We offer a course at the Marine Science Institute in UP Diliman called “Biological Structures.” The topics we cover range from biological molecules (small and large), to cells, to organ systems, to whole organisms, to populations and ecosystems. One of the recurring fundamental questions we ask is — are there underlying principles, with fine similarities and differences, at these different levels of biological structure?

These days it's almost guaranteed: if you do something innovative in the tech world, bringing a new type of product to market successfully, get ready for that lawsuit. If anything, it's almost surprising that this lawsuit wasn't filed earlier, but research firm HillCrest Labs has sued Nintendo for patent infringement over its Wii controller. And, of course, HillCrest gets two cracks at it, since the company is using the popular loophole to both file a lawsuit in court and ask the International Trade Commission (ITC) for an injunction against Nintendo.

Astronomers studying ways to deal with incoming near-Earth asteroids (NEA) that might be on a collision course with our planet want to know in detail what these space rocks are made of. The better they "know the enemy" the better they can come up with ways to destroy or change the course of NEAs. Since we've only studied a couple of asteroids up close with spacecraft, the best way to learn more about the composition of asteroids should be fairly easy: just look at meteorites that fall to Earth, which are small chunks of asteroids. But in doing so, researchers discovered quite a huge discrepancy. The vast majority of asteroids that whiz by Earth are of a type that matches only a tiny fraction of the meteorites that most frequently hit our planet.

Whether it is a fat panda, a lonely robot or a guy in armour with a sword, I'm sure most of us over a certain age get bored very quickly with the marketing blitz that accompanies each and every release of a kids' film these days. And of course along with that comes the obligatory multi-platform cash-in - and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian fulfils its side of the deal in this respect. I've been taking a look at the PS3 version of the game, although name the console and there is of course a version for you.

It's no secret that our favorite spot in Italy is Montalcino. This lovely hill town is home to our favorite wine: Brunello and so many friends we have made in our pretty much annual visit. We are honorary members of two of the towns 4 quartieri: Pianello & Travaglio. This menu will feature the food we have come to love so much. Your choices will include Crostini Toscani, Panzanella and Scotiglia (a hunter's stew). The four course meal will be $48.00 per person with a wine pairing available for an additional $30 per person. The Montalcino Tasting menu is available all evening long, either at the bar, a table or on our patio, weather permitting. There is a vegetarian selection for every course. Dino is located at 3435 Connecticut Avenue in Cleveland Park.

An anonymous reader writes "The board game The War On Terror is a satirical game in which George Bush's 'Axis of Evil' is reduced to a spinner in the middle of the board, which determines which player is designated a terrorist state. That person then has to wear a balaclava (included in the box set) with the word 'Evil' stitched onto it. Kent police said they had confiscated the game because the balaclava 'could be used to conceal someone's identity or could be used in the course of a criminal act.' Balaclavas are freely sold all over the place in the area." Schneier has blogged this stupidity, of course.
