Countrywide loses personal data in insider scam

A former Countrywide Home Loans employee was one of two California men charged in a scam to steal and sell personal data of customers.

The FBI has busted a former Countrywide Home Loan worker who is suspected of downloading the personal data of some 20,000 customers a week over a period of two years and selling it to third parties.

Two men were arrested today on charges related to the illegal access of computers containing personal identification information of Countrywide Home Loan customers and the illegal sale of the data, announced Salvador Hernandez, assistant director in charge of the FBI in Los Angeles, and United States Attorney Thomas P. O'Brien.

Thief Used USB Drive to Steal Customer Data

The FBI arrested an employee at mortgage lender Countrywide and charged him with stealing and selling customer information from Countrywide systems during a two-year period. According to the charges, the thief only made $50-70K for the sales, which doesn’t seem like much when one considers the prison time he now faces.
