Does the iPhone 3G only cost $100 to make? Not on your life. Several sites have cited an article from EETimes, which in turn cites Portelligent, an Austin-based "teardown" analysis company that believes the iPhone 3G has a bill of materials around $100. Portelligent arrives at this conclusion based on a teardown of the original iPhone plus some speculation of what chips and components are included in the latest iPhone hardware, not on an actual teardown of the iPhone 3G. However, the mere cost of the materials used, even when accurate, is still not a good indicator of the cost to produce any manufactured device—especially not one as complex as an iPhone.

Widespread failures of launch-model Xbox 360s are mainly due to Microsoft efforts at cost-cutting, a Gartner analyst claims. Bryan Lewis, the latter company's VP of research, says that when Microsoft was originally designing its game console, it wanted to omit third-party ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) vendors from its graphics hardware, saving tens of millions of dollars. In designing its own graphics technology, however, it produced chips which regularly overheated, forcing recalls that cost the company over $1 billion.

Exchange-traded funds, long known as a low-cost method of investing for individual investors, are receiving increasing media exposure as a potential solution to reduce 401(k) plan fees. In fact, ETFs have been touted by at least one firm as the "low-cost solution for 401(k)s." The reason for the increased media exposure for ETFs is relatively straightforward: On average, ETFs cost less (i.e., have lower expense ratios) than actively managed mutual funds. However, comparing passively managed ETFs with actively managed mutual funds ignores the fact that there are already passive index mutual funds that are being used in retirement plans today.

Materials researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a simplified, low-cost process for producing high-quality, water-soluble "quantum dots" for biological research. By using a laboratory microwave reactor to promote the synthesis of the widely used nanomaterials, the recently published NIST process avoids a problematic step in the conventional approach to making quantum dots, resulting in brighter, more stable dots.
