(PRWEB) August 3, 2008 -- What ever happened 321 Studios' DVDXCopy? DVD X Copy was the DVD copy software (http://www.dvdxcopy.com) that started it all and was eventually banned for sale by the Hollywood studios. This infamous product line, created by 321 Studios, was the first mainstream DVD burning software program that enabled novice computer users to copy any DVD movie. If you run a Google search on "DVD X Copy" or "321 Studios", you will find dozens of news articles that chronicled the rise and fall of 321 Studios.

imageSprint (NYSE: S) Nextel will be canceling PC downloads from its music store in about two weeks, RCR reports. “Beginning (Oct. 15), Sprint Music Store purchases will no longer include a second PC copy,” reads a note on the service’s website. Customers who have already purchased tracks must download the PC copy to their desktop by Oct. 14 it adds. The service currently allows customers to purchase tracks directly to their cellphone for 99 cents while a second copy can be downloaded to their computer later. The Groove Mobile-powered store at Sprint always had an odd caveat when it came to the PC copy anyway. Customers can download a second copy of the track on their PC, but DRM only allows it to be played on the handset on which it was originally purchased.

The Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure Copy (SCP) make remotely performing system administration and copying files across secure links a painless operation. SSH and SCP use the same SSH protocol to protect network communications, but they rely on users knowing if they want a shell or to copy a file beforehand. You cannot easily use an existing SSH shell connection to a remote machine and just grab one or two files; if you want the files, you'll have to make another SSH connection for the file copy using SCP -- unless you have ssh-xfer.

Anytime you even tiptoe near the turf of the entertainment industry, the alarms go off, the security lights go on, and the cry of “Release the hounds” goes up, so RealNetworks knew what it was in for today when it launched RealDVD, a program that lets users copy copy-protected movies to a PC hard drive. Mere minutes after the software went on sale, Real sicced its own pack of legal beagles on the DVD Copy Control Association and the major studios, asking a federal court to preemptively declare that what the program does is perfectly legal. That move was followed immediately by that which it sought to preempt — a suit filed by the studios seeking to block the sale of the software on the grounds that it violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

langelgjm writes "The New York Times reports that RealNetworks will begin selling RealDVD today, a software program designed to make copying DVDs a trivial task for the average user. Unlike free alternatives, which generally require some technical knowledge and make it difficult to copy an entire DVD with extras, etc., RealDVD claims to be able to copy the entire DVD, menus and all. While sure to raise the ire of Hollywood, the program does have significant limitations: the DVDs it makes will only be playable on the computer where they were created; or, users can pay $20 per computer to play the DVDs on up to five additional computers."

Despite a smattering of positive reviews from the video game press it seems consumers aren't quite so happy about EA's latest PC release. The game from The Sims creator Will Wright sees you evolve from a single cell organism into a world conquering species and is expected to be one of the biggest sellers of the year, but many gamers are angry about something that isn't really anything to do with the game.
