AT&T to sell contract-free iPhone

The telecom titan will sell the new version of Apple's (AAPL) smart phone without a phone-service contract for $599 or $699, depending on the memory options, representing a $400 premium from the standard price with a 2-year contract. The original iPhone was not available without a phone contract. Still, the contract-free phones will be locked to work only on AT&T's (T) network. AT&T will start selling the new phone on July 11. AT&T slid 1.2% to 33.30. Apple jumped 4.3% to 174.68.

AT&T to sell $699 iPhone

AT&T to sell $699 iPhone AT&T announced recently that they would be offering another version of the iPhone, one that comes without a contract. That sounds great, on the surface – but just a bit deeper you discover that the no-contract phone has some very severe side effects. Namely, it hurts your wallet – a lot – as the phone runs $400 more than the same model phone with a contract. The $299 version of the iPhone without contract will become $699, a small fortune.

Sentiment Snapshot: Evergreen Solar (ESLR)

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average is trading with a triple-digit loss, the shares of Evergreen Solar (ESLR: View sentiment for ESLRsentiment, chart, options) have taken the road less traveled. The gains are likely attributable to the company's recent announcement that it has locked a $1.2-billion sales contract with German-based IBC SOLAR AG extending through 2013. The new contract brings the solar sultan's total contractual backlog to roughly $3 billion. "This contract represents the single largest contract in the history of our company," ESLR chairman, president and CEO Richard M. Feldt stated, "and is one of the largest contracts ever between a panel manufacturer and a distributor."

The Real Price Of The iPhone: $599

As was widely expected, it turns out that all the hype and fuss about the iPhone costing $199 was really hiding the key facts: it's only that price if you're buying it in the US, along with a long term contract with high service fees. At first it actually appeared as though the only possible way you could buy the phone was with one of those contracts. However, AT&T has now admitted that it will indeed sell the phone without a contract, but the price will be $599. While some unlockers may find that worthwhile, it's probably a bit much for most. Still, this once again highlights how Apple's predictions that it was going to change the economics of the mobile phone industry haven't actually been true. There are plenty of mobile phones out there that you can buy subsidized under a contract, which cost 3x as much without a contract.

AT&T's Odd iPhone Offer

Some of the details surrounding AT&T's iPhone prices make little sense, writes Eric Benderoff. The company will sell a 3G iPhone with no contract for a $400 premium. Unlocked phones aren't uncommon, but that $599 iPhone will only be unlocked from a contract, not from the carrier -- it'll still have to use AT&T. Why not just buy the $199 version and pay the $175 early contract termination fee?
