Toshiba to add Internet connectivity to DVD players? Toshiba’s HD DVD format may be dead and forgotten, but the Japanese company just isn’t ready to surrender against Blu-ray and start manufacturing players for the format. Not only are they working on DVD up-scaling technology that will supposedly deliver quality video comparable to that of Blu-ray, but apparently the company is also looking into adding other HD DVD-derived features to DVD players.

With AT&T and Apple's HSDPA-supported iPhone on the market for a month, the honeymoon seems officially over and some of the unit's deficiencies are becoming a little clearer. CNET highlights how many 3G iPhone users have seen dropped connectivity as they wander between AT&T's EDGE and HSDPA networks (problems not apparent with other AT&T phones). While Apple and AT&T say nothing is wrong, CNET claims there's mounting evidence across all global iPhone markets to suggest that there's either a problem on ATT's network, a defect on the iPhone's circuit board, or both.

Chicago (IL) - Many iPhone 3G owners don’t quite experience the twice as fast, half the price cellphone they were promised. Connectivity problems are reported to be impacting the 3G experience, ranging from a weak 3G reception and connectivity, speed declines to EDGE and even dropped calls. Although lots of fingers pointed into AT&Ts direction initially, we are now learning that users in European countries are experiencing similar problems. Some analysts believe that Apple may have programmed the iPhone 3G chipset too conservatively, suggesting that firmware update should fix the issue. However, engineers highlight possible manufacturing problems caused by the substantial manufacturing ramp that reportedly is beyond actual capacity.

You may or may not have an enterprise client, but if you're using Java, you already know that presentation isn't everything: database access is as crucial a design consideration as the interface. The Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) API is your all-purpose link between applications and your databases. Based on Microsoft's Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) technology, JDBC is relational database-friendly and supports SQL. With the correct driver, you can use this API to connect to any database that supports an ODBC interface. Putting it another way, if your application is three-tier, you can use JDBC to create a layer of abstraction between your business logic level and your data level: all you need to slip is a new database in place under your apps as new drivers.

John, you can provide a secure start-up of encryption services in a typical retail POS configuration by implementing the following (very general) best practice for an automated process and for a manual process. Each Local Security (Encryption) Service should be locked upon start-up. While locked, all sensitive data is encrypted and presumably safely stored. During the Local Security Service start-up procedure the application is unlocked so that it can get on with its business processing functions. Unlocking can occur through an automated or manual process – the latter is invoked in situations where the retail WAN connectivity is unavailable for some reason (if WAN connectivity is used). The security of this process depends on the secrecy of the unlock keys, which are unique to each retail site and should only be used once.
