The Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure Copy (SCP) make remotely performing system administration and copying files across secure links a painless operation. SSH and SCP use the same SSH protocol to protect network communications, but they rely on users knowing if they want a shell or to copy a file beforehand. You cannot easily use an existing SSH shell connection to a remote machine and just grab one or two files; if you want the files, you'll have to make another SSH connection for the file copy using SCP -- unless you have ssh-xfer.

3G iPhone, Nomura analyst Richard Windsor said in a note to clients Tuesday. He said some iPhone users are having trouble getting a 3G connection and hanging on to it. Hiccups reportedly include a high incidence of dropped calls, switching onto the slower EDGE network while the device is stationary and loss of reception while in good coverage. "We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain Infineon is the 3G supplier," Windsor wrote. He added that because the problems are likely to be embedded in the low-level software and the chipset, a firmware upgrade from Apple is unlikely to fix the problems, giving rivals Nokia Corp.

A client using ISA 2000 can't connect to their network servers when connecting through a VPN. At first they can access them, but after a few minutes they can't access the servers. The VPN connection is still connected, but they can't do anything on the network remotely. What could be causing the network server loss?

A tiny company called Nullriver today released what is arguably one of the most useful iPhone applications to date: NetShare. With a tiny bit of configuring, the $10 software allows you to share your iPhone's EDGE or 3G connection with your Mac notebook (or any computer in general). We've compiled an illustrated 10-step guide that we hope will simplify the configuration process and provide an overview of the software for those who may be considering it as a purchase.

NetShare is one app we never thought would make it onto the official iPhone App Store. All it does is set up a SOCKS5 proxy for you to get your laptop/computer online through use of the 3G/EDGE connection. Does it work? Yes. Yes it does, much to our surprise. EDGE works just fine, although Mahoney says it's slow as balls. 3G impressions in a sec. Be careful of how much bandwidth you're using, since your provider probably makes a frowny face at you using their network to power your laptop, however "unlimited" your plan may be. [NetShare - Thanks Matthew and Ryan!]

In recent history, the healing powers of the mind-body connection in medicine have become increasingly renowned. Although the original skepticism of scientific and medical communities prevented the acceptance of the mind-body connection into the realm of mainstream medicine, today it is ever more acknowledged that one’s psychological convictions can affect the physiological to create an impressive force for the improvement of health, and even the conquest and prevention of such severe illnesses as cancer and heart disease. Indeed, the “power of positive thinking” has inspired a revolution of “miracles” in health care; today, hope is considered a fundamental and necessary principle of medical practice.

"The firewall rules for Template 1 are shown in the screenshot below. As you click on each cell in the grid in the top of the window, the bottom pane changes to allow you to edit the data in that cell. Instead of simply entering a TCP connection type and a port number, the template firewall offers the SSH service as an option in the tree view on the left side, which is what this rule is using to define where the connection is destined. The service that the template refers to is part of the system definitions and is read-only, allowing you to see the details in the pane but not edit them."

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 07, 2008 ) SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Adoption of an Internet Protocol (IP) interface is growing across virtually all TV-oriented consumer electronics devices, according to a new whitepaper recently released by MultiMedia Intelligence. Manufacturers of IPTV, cable, and satellite set-top boxes, video game consoles, Blu-ray DVD players, audio devices, digital media adapters and a new class of Internet-enabled TVs are adding an IP connection to their boxes. By 2012, MultiMedia Intelligence projects over 217 million Internet-enabled consumer electronics will be shipping annually. However, simply integrating an IP connection into CE devices is not enough to achieve the truly transformational impact that this market could ultimately have.

The day I became a story on page one of the Hindustan Times (Blogged in India, between covers in Pakistan), people looked at me, looked away, and then looked again. What kicks I got. Current friends demanded a treat, forgotten friends demanded to meet, neighbours congratulated and strangers called from Gorakhpur and Buffalo (my phone number is listed on my blog). But these moments of glory are fleeting. The day dies, the daily is dumped, and that day’s story becomes yesterday’s headline. Life chugs back to anonymity and I’m back in the darkness, groping to keep the machine running — five blogs, one day-job and five bosses in that day-job to take care of.
