Why are you a designer?

I am a designer because I wanted to solve problems in a beautiful way. I started out focusing purely on the way things worked - solving problems with my code. But as I created more and more pages I realized that the best solutions were the ones that connected with the customers. And the ones that connected were the designs that looked the best (or maybe it's that the ones that looked the best connected most with the customers...). At any rate, I realized then that I couldn't just focus on how a Web page solved a problem, I had to focus on the design as well. Now, I think of myself as a Web designer/developer. I build Web solutions that look great and serve a purpose. The Design O'Blog has a number of other reasons why people are designers. Why are you a designer?

The Linux Robot - Progress, Software & a Video

"The camera draws over 350mA@12V and there's no reason why I need it permenantly on. I've connected one of the Phidget Kit's outputs to a simple transistor/resistor/LED circuit, with a 12V supply passing into the transistor's collector pin, through the transistor, relay input and resistor. Then I've connected the camera's power over the relay's output. The power on and off for the camera/LED are now through setting the board's digital output 0 to 1 and 0 respectively. Power consumption with no movement has now dropped from 1.25A to just under 0.90A. I've also put all essential USB hardware on one usb hub and all optional hardware on another (USB to TTL adapters, sound adapter) on the other. The optional hub is also on a relay now on the opposite side of the robot, and this now reduces idle power consumption from 0.

Student Invention May Significantly Extend Mobile Device Battery Life

imamac writes with this excerpt from news out of Carleton University: "Atif Shamim, an electronics PhD student at Carleton University, has built a prototype that extends the battery life of portable gadgets such as the iPhone and BlackBerry, by getting rid of all the wires used to connect the electronic circuits with the antenna. ... The invention involves a packaging technique to connect the antenna with the circuits via a wireless connection between a micro-antenna embedded within the circuits on the chip. 'This has not been tried before — that the circuits are connected to the antenna wirelessly. They've been connected through wires and a bunch of other components. That's where the power gets lost,' Mr. Shamim said." The story's headline claims the breakthrough can extend battery life by up to 12 times, but that seems to be a misinte

Build an Available Linux Server Environment With IBM Blades

"This article shows you how to boot from SAS storage (in this case, the IBM System Storage DS3200) using the IBM BladeCenter-H and x86-based BladeCenter HS21 and LS21 servers. (For BladeCenter-E, check the blade compatibility matrix listed below in the Resources section to see if your environment is supported.) You will also see how to enable multipathing in Linux. Multipathing, or multipath I/O, is a fault-tolerance and performance enhancement technique where more than one physical path exists between the CPU and its mass storage devices. Simple examples are a SCSI disk connected to two SCSI controllers on the same computer or a disk connected to two Fibre Channel ports.
