closure: search
Closure, the idea of bringing something consequential to a satisfying end, is usually mentioned in the context of a tragedy. Victims of physical or emotional violence, for instance, seek closure in order to move past their traumatic experiences. The dramatic premise of "Away From Her," the first movie directed by the gifted young Canadian actress Sarah Polley, is that closure is sometimes impossible to achieve.

's Hemiwedge Cartridge Valve features a patented mechanical-seal design for critical service applications. The valve utilizes aspects of ball valves, gate valves, and even triple-offset butterfly valves to protect the sealing surface during valve operation. A tapered hemispherical closure member (the hemi) rotates around a fixed core and wedges into a fixed seat to affect a mechanical seal. The closure member is rotated a quarter-turn by a valve stem, which may be operated manually with a wrench or gear operator or automatically with a pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric actuator. Unlike designs with a rotating ball or plug, the valve features a constant fixed core within the body to provide protection of the seating surfaces when the valve is opened, as well as minimizing turbulence as the valve is either opened or closed.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- If there is one topic that seems to get Java programmers excited, it's the question of whether to include a new feature called closures in the next version of Java. Advocates say closures would bring more flexibility to the language, but others worry it might encourage bad coding practices and make the language more difficult to work with.
