gyrogeerloose writes "Steven Hawking unveiled an unsettling clock in Cambridge on Friday. Designed by John Tayor — a British horologist and inventor whose thermostatic switch is incorporated in millions of electric appliance worldwide--the clock was conceived as a tribute to another British inventor, John Harrison. Harrison invented the grasshopper escapement in the early 18th Century, which resulted in extremely accurate mechanical time keeping and was instrumental in solving the 'Longitude Problem.' Tayor's clock, which in entirely mechanical in operation but has no hands, uses a fearsome-looking 'demon grasshopper' as its escapement. 'I [...] wanted to depict that time is a destroyer — once a minute is gone you can't get it back' Taylor said.

I’m in the market for a new iPod doc and clock combo. My current unit won’t work with the iPhone 3G, and to be honest, I could use a little more room on the nightstand. The CVT i3101 is an iPod/iPhone/Doc/Clock that is also wall-mountable. And at $99 the price is right.

You can use your iPod for more than just listening to music or watching videos. With a set of connected speakers, you can transform your iPod into an alarm clock that plays your favorite tunes to wake you up. In the menu, just go to Extras and select Alarms. Create a new alarm and choose the date and time and the sound you want for the alarm. To add music as an alarm, highlight a song from your music list and hold the select button until the song title flashes. This means the song has been added to your On-The-Go playlist, which you can select from the alarm options.

Memorex hopes to push down the cost of iPod-aware clock radios today with two relative budget models. The iWakeUp is the range leader with a relatively streamlined look and the most advanced features, including dual alarms for weekdays versus weekends and a sound enhancer for its more powerful speakers. Like many iPod-ready radios, it can also set the alarms to trigger either the iPod itself, an AM or FM radio station, or a buzzer. The device is compatible with most all dockable iPods up to the iPod touch, though the company shows an iPhone in the dock and hints at possible support for at least Airplane Mode. The iWakeUp sells today for $70 in black and white versions.

Sony Insider has uncovered Sony's newest Dream Machine, the ICF-CD3iP, the most attractive iPhone/iPod Clock/Radio Dock I've seen yet. No telling what it sounds like, but for the $100 or so it will cost when it eventually surfaces, I'm guessing it would be somewhere between "tinny but decent" and "hey, that's not so bad."
