On Dobbs, radio host claimed HUD said "about 5 million illegal alien home mortgage loans ... have gone bad," but HUD reportedly says stat is bogus

Summary: On Lou Dobbs Tonight, Roger Hedgecock claimed that the Department of Housing and Urban Development "was talking about 5 million illegal alien home mortgage loans that have gone bad." But Hedgecock did not cite a source for the purported HUD statistic. In fact, an article published more than an hour before Lou Dobbs Tonight aired reported that HUD "says there is no basis to news reports that more than 5 million bad mortgages are held by illegal immigrants" and that "a HUD spokesman said his agency has no data showing the number of illegal immigrants holding foreclosed or bad mortgages."

LHC bans polythene bags in Punjab

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Justice Shabbar Raza Rizvi on Wednesday, in response to a petition, imposed a ban on the use of polythene bags throughout the province. The petition submitted by Khurram Khan advocate claimed that polythene bags were in common use without consideration of the fact that they posed a serious health threat. He claimed that polythene bags contributed to flooding as they choked drainage systems, resulting in the spread of disease and creating problems for the provincial and city governments. He said that the bags also caused soil infertility and caused damage to marine life, adding that black polythene bags also posed the risk of cancer. The petition said that the dumping of polythene bags was not safe due to their non-biodegradable nature, whilst recycling was a costly affair, which would burden already limited gover

Tim Burton, Morgan Freeman, Usher

A long-running lawsuit filed by Tim Burton's former girlfriend, Lisa Marie , over his assets should be dismissed, an appeals court has ruled. The California Court of Appeals issued a ruling ordering a lower court judge to grant a motion by Burton's attorneys for a summary judgment. The move halts a trial scheduled for next week that would have focused on the couple's nearly decade-long relationship, which ended in 2001. The actress claimed that she was cheated out of money that Burton had promised her during their relationship. An attorney representing her said that she planned to appeal the ruling. In court documents, Burton claimed he paid Marie $5.5 million. Burton has argued that she signed an agreement relinquishing any claims to future assets and should return the money if she did not want to abide by the contract.

Simple Device Claimed To Boost Fuel Efficiency By Up To 20%

Ponca City, We love you writes "Temple University physics professor Rongjia Tao has developed a simple device that could dramatically improve fuel efficiency in automobiles by as much as 20 percent. The device, attached to the fuel line of a car's engine near the fuel injector, creates an electric field that thins fuel, reducing its viscosity so that smaller droplets are injected into the engine. Because combustion starts at the droplet surface, smaller droplets lead to cleaner and more efficient combustion. Six months of road testing in a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz automobile showed an increase from 32 miles per gallon to 38 mpg, a 20 percent boost, and a 12-15 percent gain in city driving. 'We expect the device will have wide applications on all types of internal combustion engines, present ones and future ones,' Tao wrote in the stud

Kaminsky DNS Bug Claimed Fixed By 1-Character Patch

An anonymous reader writes "According to a thread on the bind-users mailing list, there is nothing inherent in the DNS protocol that would cause the massive vulnerability discussed at length here and elsewhere. As it turns out, it appears to be a simple off-by-one error in BIND, which favors new NS records over cached ones (even if the cached TTL is not yet expired). The patch changes this in favor of still-valid cached records, removing the attacker's ability to successfully poison the cache outside the small window of opportunity afforded by an expiring TTL, which is the way things used to be before the Kaminsky debacle. Source port randomization is nice, but removing the root cause of the attack's effectiveness is better."

BlackBerry cooks up a Storm

Claimed to have the world's first “clickable” touch screen, the BlackBerry Storm supports single and multi-touch gestures, but also provides haptic feedback when keys are pressed on the screen — unlike Apple’s iPhone 3G. The 3.25in display slightly depresses when pressed, similar to the feeling of pressing a key on a physical keyboard or a button on a mouse. RIM claims this dramatically enhances the touch interface and results in an intuitive typing experience. Despite being a full touch-screen device, the Storm includes familiar navigational keys including phone, menu and escape.
