Cisco announced that ROMATSA, the Romanian Air Traffic Service Association, implemented an IP Cisco network for air traffic services. This network is a communication platform for all air traffic services, including data transfer for aeronautical applications. According to the company, the Cisco solution helps ROMATSA reduce operational costs, and meet its special requirements of resiliency and redundancy. "The new network architecture implemented by ROMATSA proves that the intrinsic flexibility of IP communications can provide resiliency and redundancy by reducing operational costs. This is very important in an area such as air traffic control, where reliability is essential, and standards are very strict", said Bogdan Constantinescu, general manager, Cisco Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

and Larry Hettick say in their Convergence and VoIP newsletter that Cisco’s fixed mobile convergence strategy (along with its new product, the Cisco 3300 Series MSE) bring the company to an already crowded table. FMC suppliers include Siemens Enterprise Communications, Aastra, NEC, Tango, Agito, and others. To top that off, true to Cisco's form, the MSE's premium price tag will make it attractive only to bigger customers -- the mid-sized enterprise and beyond. However, the writers think that by providing an open API as part of the package, "Cisco takes a positive step to encourage applications developers that can bring more to FMC than straight-forward handoffs between the Wi-Fi and mobile network."

Ask a thousand computing professionals what company name is synonymous with networking, and I'd wager that the vast majority would reply "Cisco." That Cisco has that kind of mind share must be very gratifying to its marketing department. While I can't argue that Cisco makes some very fine networking equipment--it obviously does--I'm not as enthused about the licensing under which the equipment is delivered. I can re-sell the hardware, but the embedded software is licensed, thus making the resale value of the equipment relatively worthless. To me, the cachet of the Cisco name is not worth the price, particularly if you keep in mind that the protocols used to deliver packets from one network to another are standard stuff. Because of the cost, building a Cisco-equipped lab with which you can study networking is outside the budget of most IT

Cisco Systems, Intel and four other backers of a wireless Internet standard called WiMax said they want to help spread use of the technology by limiting possible patent royalties. Cisco, Intel, Samsung Electronics, Alcatel Lucent, Sprint Nextel and Clearwire will pool patents needed to develop equipment used on the new networks, making it easier for potential suppliers, Sriram Viswanathan, general manager of Intel Capital, said on a conference call. "It brings a mechanism to keep the royalty rates low," Viswanathan said. "It brings transparency." Backers of the technology want makers of consumer electronics to build printers, music-file players, digital cameras and other gadgets that will connect to the Internet using the new standard, executives on the call said.
