CERN announces start-up date for Large Hadron Collider

CERN1 has today announced that the first attempt to circulate a beam in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be made on 10 September. This news comes as the cool down phase of commissioning CERN’s new particle accelerator reaches a successful conclusion. Television coverage of the start-up will be made available through Eurovision.

And despite that September 10th date, according to the BBC, "On 9 August, protons will be piped through LHC magnets for the first time."

FCC Chief Says Comcast Violated Internet Rules

Several readers sent in word that the FCC chairman, Kevin Martin, is calling for sanctions and enforcement actions against Comcast for resetting BitTorrent traffic. "Mr. Martin will circulate an order recommending enforcement action against the company on Friday among his fellow commissioners, who will vote on the measure at an open meeting on Aug. 1... Martin, a Republican, will likely get support from the two Democrats on the commission, who are both proponents of the network neutrality concept. The Large Hadron Collider — the biggest experiment in particle physics — will start in earnest on 10 September, according to officials at the European laboratory CERN. The officials say that on this date engineers will make the first attempt to circulate proton beams around the 27 km-long accelerator.
