Compressed VoIP Calls Vulnerable To Bugging

holy_calamity writes "Security researchers at Johns Hopkins report that a variable bit-rate compression scheme being rolled out on VoIP systems leaves encrypted calls vulnerable to bugging. Simpler syllables are squeezed into smaller data packets, with more complex ones taking up more space; the researchers built software that uses this to spot phrases of interest in encrypted calls simply by measuring packet size."

Deutsche Telekom Secretly Tracked Phone Calls

Dekortage writes "German telephone giant Deutsche Telekom has admitted to secretly tracking the phone calls between board members and journalists, in an effort to identify media leaks about internal affairs. As noted by the German Journalists' Association, 'This company has special access to the records of its customers.... That means it has a special obligation to be trustworthy.' DT denies having eavesdropped; it merely tracked the calls dialed."

Maximo iP-HS1 iMetal Stereo Headset for the Apple iPhone

Today we are looking at a headset for the iPhone called the Maximo iP-HS1 iMetal Stereo Headset. The headset has a built-in mic for making and receiving calls and a soft touch button that allows you to answer and hang up calls as well. Sound quality from the Maximo iP-HS1 iMetal Stereo Headset is good with nice deep bass and crisp highs and mids. The headset works well for calls with clear and legible speech on both sides of the conversation. The mic does pick up a bit of extraneous room sounds, but not so much to be a real issue.

Wednesday Options Outlook: BAC, XLF, LEH, YHOO, EBAY, S, HOT

This morning’s 1.6% decline to $32.15 has shares of Bank of America hovering within cents of its 52-week low – the move lower follows revelations in a Merrill Lynch note that the next head of the credit hydra will hit Bank of America on its vulnerability to consumer and mortgage loans, exacerbated by the pain of a massive write-down on its acquisition of mortgage lender Countrywide. With implied volatility at 38% showing option traders pricing in more than a third additional price risk to Bank of America shares over the coming 30 days, the 90,000-strong option volume shows a relative balance between puts and calls. While the buying interest in June 35 calls we observed this morning may be the upshot of traders looking to protect short positions in the underlying stock, the two-way traffic in low strike calls suggests traders playi

Early Review Calls New Indiana Jones Film Dreadful

bowman9991 writes "Hope this one isn't true! An early negative review calls the upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" movie predictable, lacking in tension, and a fan's worst nightmare. SFFMedia believes this new Indiana Jones movie could create a similar reaction a lot of people experienced after watching the first of the last three Star Wars movies, 'The Phantom Menace': you wait for years and years, the anticipation building, and then it's so awful it taints your view of the original movies. Of course George Lucas was involved with Star Wars too." The SFFMedia piece refers to this review on Ain't it Cool News. The trailer I saw (before Iron Man) actually looked great to me, so I'm taking this with a grain of salt.

KEN SILVERSTEIN-North Carolina "Robo-callers" Exposed

Who’s behind the mysterious “robo-calls” that have spread misleading voter information and sown confusion and frustration among North Carolina residents over the last week? Facing South has confirmed the source of the calls, and the mastermind is Women’s Voices Women Vote, a D.C.-based nonprofit which aims to boost voting among “unmarried women voters.” What’s more, Facing South has learned that the firestorm Women’s Voices has ignited in North Carolina isn’t the group’s first brush with controversy. Women’s Voices’ questionable tactics have spawned thousands of voter complaints in at least 11 states and brought harsh condemnation from some election officials for their secrecy, misleading nature and likely violations of election law.

New Phone Taps Published by Espresso Berlusconi-Sacc Case Again under Scrutiny

ROME – More transcripts of tapped phone calls revealing relations between the prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, who was head of the opposition at the time, and the former director of Rai Fiction, Agostino Saccà, have been published in today’s issue of the weekly Espresso and on the magazine’s web site. The calls, made in 2007, are among the 9,000 submitted by magistrates in Naples investigating allegations of corruption against Mr Berlusconi and Mr Saccà. Mr Berlusconi’s lawyer, parliamentarian Nicolò Ghedini, said a formal complaint would be presented.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

John McCain has earned some accolades from conservatives for holding weekly conference calls for righty bloggers. I've participated in a few of these and always found the back-and-forth discussion to be open, and often, more forward-thinking than many traditional press conference calls. McCain, and his online outreach guru Patrick Hynes, have flipped things this week by inviting liberal and "non-political" bloggers to join in on a conference call. It's certainly debatable as to whether this sort of outreach is worth McCain's time. He's not likely to sway their opinions, but it does earn him praise and attention from media outlets like this one for showing a bipartisan touch. It also fits well with his campaign themes of the past week, both in outlining what his first time would look like, and his proposals for combating climate change.

Google, IBM, Red Hat, Sun and the Digistan Connection

Another anti-Microsoft (MSFT) front group has emerged in favor of “free and open standards,” hyping what it calls the Hague Declaration and making some absurd connection to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The propagandists, partially funded by publicly traded companies, have a little trouble describing what that term “free and open standards” means (or even using it consistently), but the group has no trouble indicating its political stripes. Unbelievably it calls itself Digistan, apparently to identify with the fascist terrorists based in countries and regions using the Farsi-based suffix “stan.”

Total Phone and Email Database Proposed In UK

mishmash writes "The Times of London is reporting a proposal for a massive government database holding details of all phone calls, emails, and time spent on the Internet. This is to be justified as being 'part of the fight against crime and terrorism.' Quoting: 'Internet service providers and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.' If you want to write to representatives to let them know your views, contact details are available at Write to Them." UK telecoms are already required to keep records of phone calls and text messages for 12 months, accessible by subpoena; the requirement is already slated to expand to records of Internet usage, emails, and VoIP. This new proposal aims to centralize all that information in a single database in the Home Office.
